2.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: This book is unfortunatly poorly titled., October 21, 1997
This book the second part of a two part series and covers "older" COBOL languages such as Cobol-85. It DOES NOT cover anything about the current COBOL II language. The title should be, "The Essentials of Cobol - Volume II". If you choose to buy this book, be sure to also purchase "The Essentials of COBOL I." "COBOL II" is a continuation of the "COBOL I" book and in fact the first page of "COBOL II" is 107. The two books should probably be sold as a boxed set rather than individually.

In itself, the book is a study guide that might be compared to the Cliffs Notes series. You could read it cover-to-cover as part of a COBOL study. It is also useful later as a small quick reference guide if you want to look up the form of a particular COBOL statement.

I gave the book a low rating because it was written in 1989 and is getting irrelevant to the COBOL language (COBOL II, etc) of today. It is meticulaously well written and would have gotten a much higher rating a few years ago.

The full title is, "COBOL II - Quick Access to the Important Facts and Figures." The title was correct in it's day and described the book well. But, again, it does not cover any of the concepts of the language COBOL II. Steer clear unless you are into antique COBOL.

If someone were to update this series then they would be outstanding books.
