Book Description

January 18, 2006 1585622435 978-1585622436 2
This new edition of Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology is a synopsis and update of the most clinically relevant material from The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychopharmacology, Third Edition. The Essentials focuses on the aspects of psychopharmacology directly related to clinical care and will appeal to psychiatry residents, primary care physicians, and others interested in a concise tutorial on clinical psychopharmacology.

The book is organized around two major sections of the Textbook. The first section, Classes of Psychiatric Treatments, presents information by classes of drugs and greatly expands on the first edition of the textbook by focusing whole chapters on single drugs in the antidepressant, antipsychotic, and bipolar categories. For each drug within a class, data are reviewed on preclinical and clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, indications, dosages, side effects and toxicology, and drug-drug interactions. Included are data on currently available drugs in the United States and medications that will almost certainly become available in the near future.

The second section, Psychopharmacological Treatment, provides specific information about drug selection and prescription and reviews state-of-the-art therapeutic approaches to the treatment of patients with major psychiatric disorders. Also reviewed are pharmacotherapeutic approaches for special populations, such as children and adolescents, medically ill patients, and the elderly. Chapters are devoted to pharmacotherapy in special situations, such as during pregnancy and lactation and in psychiatric emergencies. This section provides the reader with specific information about drug selection and prescribing practices.

In addition to the clinical focus of the Essentials, the authors have provided new information based on more recent literature available since publication of the Textbook. Included are updates on the effectiveness and availability of specific drugs and therapeutic approaches.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a very useful and easy to read update that clinicians can use in daily practice as a quick reference. While the textbook is recognized as one of the foremost references on psychopharmacology, this synopsis provides an excellent reference for day-to-day clinical care. It is an absolute must for anyone dealing with psychopharmacology."-- "Doody's Review Service", "June 2006"

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Primer, April 9, 2007
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Essentials of Clinical Psychopharmacology (Paperback)
This book works on several levels, as a primer on the subject of the most common psychiatric medications, as a review of pharmacological research data, and as a refresher course for those of us who deal with these medications every day, but sometimes forget certain intricacies that make these medications so complex.

The book is just comprehensive enough to give you the relevant data without overwhelming you with excess verbiage. We get enough of that in nursing and medical texts already; it is refreshing to see that the author avoided that here. If you are a psychiatric nurse, a medical student, or a therapist working on a psychopharmacology course, this book is a real plus in your arsenal.
