Book Description

Jones and George are dedicated to the challenge of "Making It Real" for students. The authors present management in a way that makes its relevance obvious even to students who might lack exposure to a "real-life" management context. Their goal is to relate management theory to real life examples to drive home the message that management matters both because it determines how well organizations perform, and because managers and organizations affect the lives of people who work inside them and people outside the organization, such as customers, communities, and shareholders..

. Essentials of Management concisely surveys current management theories and research. Through a variety of real world examples from small, medium, and large companies the reader learns how those ideas are used by practicing managers. The organization of this text follows the mainstream functional approach of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling; but the content is flexible and encourages instructors to use the organization they are most comfortable with. .

. One of the most popular features of the book has always been its focus on the "Manager as a Person," which discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems. In the 2nd Edition, the authors expand on this theme by discussing the importance of management competencies -the specific set of skills, abilities, and experiences that gives one manager the ability to perform at a higher level than another in a specific context. The themes of diversity, ethics, globalization, and information technology -all areas of importance that make up the workplace realities that todays student will encounter in the course of a career- have also been greatly expanded in the 2nd Edition in the text, photographs, "unboxed" stories, and the end-of-chapter material..

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book, December 31, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was pretty good. I bought it for an online class and the teacher for the class was really bad. I learned nothing from her, but this book was very helpful, easy to read, and I was able to self-teach from it.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I recently purchased this book for my online college course and I found it very helpful in achieving my course completion. For anyone in business or any new hire for a business which results in a management position, I highly recommend this book. It's very informative, covers a wide range of topics in organizational management, and is an excellent and a very comprehensible read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another satisfied customer, June 30, 2009

This review is from: Essentials of Contemporary Management (Paperback)
I needed a book for my online class, which I found on Amazon.com for more than 80 bucks less. I was surprized, skeptical, and almost afraid to place the order over the internet. I remember one of my co-workers mentioning that she had used Amazon.com to order her books for online classes several times. She also mentioned that she was pleased with her order and the length of time it took to receive her order. She gave me a few pointers on how to pick and choose the vendor. So, I took a chance and placed the order. From the time I placed the order until, the time it was delivered to my door; I was very impressed and pleased. I will be purchasing all books and materials from Amazon.com from this point on, and I do highly recommend their services.
