4.0 out of 5 stars All the hits - finally, February 6, 2003
This review is from: Essentials (Audio CD)
Some of the most mellow yet engaging and polished pop ditties of the late 70's came from the duo of England Dan (Seals) and John Ford Coley. Of the nine top-100 charting songs they achieved, four were top-10 including their signature first and biggest hit "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight". Among the other tunes here is the pensive "It's Sad To Belong", a tune deserving far greater recognition than the chart position it achieved in 1977. Beyond the charting singles, filling out the twelve tracks in this compilation are three cuts taken from three of their albums. While Rhino has previously done two greatest hits collections of this duo, so annoyingly characteristic of Rhino compilations at least one charting single was omitted in favor of other tracks. Here, finally, Atlantic has done a genuinely comprehensive greatest hits collection aptly entitled "The Essentials". Complementing this piece is an eight-page flopover liner notes booklet with a history of the duo's recording career along with a few pics and track details. While other collections with more tracks are out there, this new release actually has the edge over the lot of them.

I heard I Really Want to See You Tonight on a U-Tube cut and decided to buy my own copy. I've always liked it, but I used to hear it so often on the radio I didn't think I needed it. The CD is clearer than the older versions I heard on the radio. It sounds good and includes some others I've liked such as It's Sad to Belong to Someone Else. I like their sound, especially on their sentimental ballads.

Heard this main cut on XM that I hadn't heard in something like 30years and it sounded excellent. Ordered it and was really pleased with not only the songs, but the quality of engineering and the clarity of the recording. Excellent job all the way around.
