Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

(back cover)
This new and expanded edition fills a double purpose as both a useful classroom text and a practical style manual for writers. You'll find a review of English grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and correct word usage, as well as advice on how to adapt your writing style to different formats, from classroom assignments to business documents and electronic communication. You will also find detailed instruction on essay writing--outlining your subject, writing a rough draft, and editing and polishing it into a finished composition. New in this edition is a sample research paper that uses online sources and follows the popular MLA style for footnotes. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars, Whether I like it or not, December 14, 2000
By
M. D. Cummings "Marv" (Kanosh, Utah United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I gave this book five stars even though I think the book is rather stiff and boring. The newer grammar books have more zest and personality that make it easier for a dreamer like me to understand what they mean by an antecedent, or a dangling modifier or nonrestrictive clause. I think you know what I mean.

The reason I gave "Essentials of English" a five-star rating is: when I need and answer to a grammar problem and I can't find it in all of my grammar books, I can always rely on "Essentials of English" to have my answer. That rates a five-star rating with me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good grammar (especially at this price!), October 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essentials of English (Paperback)
This book offers an excellent basic coverage of English grammar (and includes, almost as an aside, an approach to composition). It also offers certain good insights into some of the interrelationships between different parts of speech, such as: "Recognition of Finite Verbs," and syntactical elements "Recognition of Sentence Fragments," etc. A great book for the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for all e-mail ad writers, July 3, 2000

This review is from: Essentials of English (Paperback)
Gets right down where the rubber meets the road. I bought one of these for each of my kids in college. They get great grades in English and they find it a useful quick reference when writing papers. Mine sits along side my dictionary & thesaurus
