5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars, Whether I like it or not
I gave this book five stars even though I think the book is rather stiff and boring. The newer grammar books have more zest and personality that make it easier for a dreamer like me to understand what they mean by an antecedent, or a dangling modifier or nonrestrictive clause. I think you know what I mean.

1.0 out of 5 stars this was the worst
This was the worst example I have ever come across.
I'm a college student and this set of books is what we have been using in english to brush up on grammer. As you may notice mine is still awful. My entire class is extreamy frustrated and highly dissapointed with this poor excuse of a tex/work book.
I think it is wort nothing more than 0 stars!!!

I gave this book five stars even though I think the book is rather stiff and boring. The newer grammar books have more zest and personality that make it easier for a dreamer like me to understand what they mean by an antecedent, or a dangling modifier or nonrestrictive clause. I think you know what I mean.

The reason I gave "Essentials of English" a five-star rating is: when I need and answer to a grammar problem and I can't find it in all of my grammar books, I can always rely on "Essentials of English" to have my answer. That rates a five-star rating with me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good grammar (especially at this price!), October 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essentials of English (Paperback)
This book offers an excellent basic coverage of English grammar (and includes, almost as an aside, an approach to composition). It also offers certain good insights into some of the interrelationships between different parts of speech, such as: "Recognition of Finite Verbs," and syntactical elements "Recognition of Sentence Fragments," etc. A great book for the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for all e-mail ad writers, July 3, 2000

Gets right down where the rubber meets the road. I bought one of these for each of my kids in college. They get great grades in English and they find it a useful quick reference when writing papers. Mine sits along side my dictionary & thesaurus

5.0 out of 5 stars Quck and Concise but Tells You What You Want to Know, June 10, 2006
This 'quick and dirty' little guide to English takes what you would have expected to be a big thick highschool textbook into a small, easy to read, yet complete course in communicating in English. Beyond high school English, the book gives examples of the practical use of the language.

As a writer, I think I know the language (college degrees and all that stuff) but when I am unsure of some point, this is where I turn. It is quick and concise, easy to find what you need, and tells you what you want to know.

At $10 retail, and usually available at a lot less than that, this is a 'don't miss.'

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive treatise on what writers should and shouldn't do, August 25, 2005

Salvador Oria "Argie" (Buenos Ayres, Argentina) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book's name falls short of the actual excellent information it contains to guide writers and would-be writers into taking advantage of the best of their possibilities through step-by-step pointing out of common errors, from all angles, and clean ways out of them to produce perfect texts. A "must" for all writers' libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource, July 24, 2002
By A Customer
'Essentials of English' is a great resource book to have on hand should you be uncertain if you are expressing yourself correctly in the written word. It is very concise, and while a bit 'dry', does not waste time in teaching you what you should know about the English language. But I am worried that I won't be able to remember what I am trying to remember from this book. I fear that no matter how hard I try, it is not sinking in and I just can't get it right. So while the book is excellent, I myslef am a failure on many counts.

It is a handbook of descriptions and rules. Not a study guide or a textbook.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK!!!, December 26, 2011
Just got my score back and I went from a 320 to a 540 on my sat writing score, which pretty much means that I took the test based on bare knowledge before. Taking this test based on everything THEY think you should remember is a fail because you wont get the score you want and walk out feeling dumb and angry. There's a book for every section of the test (MATH, READING, WRITING, and a list of vocab words to study on majortests.com).

This shows you the 20 rules or pitfalls to remember taking this test and i didn't even finish studying!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, July 15, 2011
I highly recommend this book. A must for anyone serving in a supervisory position. Although dry at times, it provides to the point information on a variety of topics. A great tool for achieving "brilliance in the basics." I have read several similiar books and none compare.
