This review is from: Essentials of Forestry Practice (Paperback)
This book provides an accessible introduction to the world of forestry: silvics, silviculture, forest management, timber harvesting, and multiple use. The language and philosophy adopted by the authors, and the examples they develop, arouse the readers' enthusiasm. For me, this was the perfect precursor to more technical fare.
I would definitely recommend this book for a general reader wanting to learn about forestry. Its appropriate use in an academic setting is more problematic. Though very well done, it is both too general and too superficial to serve as a textbook in any forestry department course. However, it might do well as a supplemental text in a college forest ecology course. It could also serve well in a secondary setting, though I have no idea what high school anywhere offers an introduction to forestry. |
