This collection contains the most popular hits of jazz saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. The tracks on this disc, taken from 1979 to 1984, are from Washington's successful stint on the Elektra label, which followed his long association with Motown/CTI in the '70s and preceded his '80s and '90s releases on the Columbia-Sony label. Featuring Washington's trademarked, blues-based sax lines, these sides with percussionist Ralph MacDonald, bassist Marcus Miller, and drummer Steve Gadd yielded tracks with some of the saxophonist's most high-powered vocal guests. There's the Afro-Caribbean tinged "Just the Two of Us," with Bill Withers's down-home vocals, and Patti Labelle's gospel-honed performance on "The Best Is Yet to Come." Instrumentally, Washington swings on the in-the-pocket "Let It Flow (for Dr. J.)" and lays down jazzy reggae riddims on his bouncy cover of Bob Marley's "Jamming." These cuts by the late saxophonist are the building blocks of today's contemporary jazz.
