What Is The Trouble? What Is The Remedy? When confronted with a presenting case, one of the greatest difficulties is, "what is the best remedy"? No matter how simple a case may appear at first sight, you must always write down the "leading symptoms" of the case. This can be done accurately at all times and will save you from giving the inappropriate remedy during the initial examination. (See the section: Lets take a history). Study the symptoms and match the remedy with that symptom which produces the same symptoms in a healthy person (this is the proving). Consider all mental and emotional signs along with physical signs. Look at the time of day. Does the problem get worse? Does warmth, cold, or pressure change the condition? Does movement relieve or compound the ailment? Inquire as to if the patient is irritable, restless or anxious. Does the patient worry, cry, or perform unusual behavior? Do they feel grief, joy, or anger? Does the patient like cold food, hot food? Do they like spicy, salty, bland, bitter, sour tasting foods, etc?

If you have no time to study the leading symptoms of the many remedies, then I suggest you refer to the "Quick-Reference Repertory" that I provide as a helpful companion and there you will find some headings which will certainly enable you to determine the correct remedy for the case you may have on hand without much trouble.

Let me illustrate with an example: Suppose the symptoms were: "feels weight in abdomen; cannot stand upright because this drags on the stomach; afraid to move; feels irritable; feels need of support to abdomen; has cold sweats." If you refer to stomach in my "Quick Reference Repertory," you will find several remedies given for this sort of trouble, including Nux-Vomica. Then, refer to the details of Nux-Vom which you get in the pages of this book which gives details of this remedy. Then you compare it with the symptoms the patient has. Thus, give Nux-Vomica 30x; a dose every hour for three (3) doses; then a dose every two hours until six (6) doses have been given. This should be enough to clear this case. Finally, give a dose night and morning (o.n. - o.m.) for one (1) more week.

Or you might meet symptoms like the following: "feels limp; feels tired; talks in sleep; has headaches (but feels better when head is covered); feet are burning, dry, hot, and sweaty." Now if you refer to the "Quick Reference Repertory" section under Headache - better when covered . . the remedy is Silica. Feet - hot, dry, sweaty . . the remedy is Silica. Sleep - with excessive dreaming and talking . . the remedy is Silica. Therefore a dose of Silica 6x; two (2) tablets three (3) times a day (t.i.d.); before meals (a.c.); until some improvement is observed, . . then move up to Silica 30x, but only give the dose of 30X every night and morning (o.n. - o.m.); and if the improvement continues, stop one dose (the evening dose). If improvement continues, you can stop the remedy, but on the first sign of relapse, start again with Silica 30x (o.n. - o.m.).

Always check the remedy to see if it is the correct one. If you have two remedies which cover most of the symptoms, the better one should not only cover all or most of the symptoms, but it should also cover the patients characteristics and be their constitutional remedy. Once you get a full grasp of the remedies, then you will fully understand the constitutional remedy for your case, but remember, it is a great help when you can select the correct one. Meantime, go by my "Quick Reference Repertory." The lessons giving the virtues of the remedies are very helpful. Those which deal with characteristics of the remedies as well as of the patient will enable you to decide on the correct remedy as soon as you have details of the patient. This is of course very valuable.

It is important to remember that a few doses of the right remedy will do far more good to any case than a few dozen of the wrong ones. Thus, it is very important to be correct and give the remedy that the symptoms are asking for.

Personal Philosophy Note. Because of my exposure to, and use of naturopathic, oriental, and homeopathic medicine it stands to reason that my philosophy would tend to make me believe that the body needs to build up and be kept up and maintained. For these purposes of full development and repair there is a need to appropriate material as force. There is a daily demand for new substance to build up in youth and to repair in adult age. The force is extracted from the food after the absorption of its elements for the rebuilding of the vertebrae, muscle, nerve, skin, etc., each in proportion needed to balance the loss of substance to provide symmetrical growth. It is evident from this that the selection of right food is of great importance. The food should contain the various elements, also the quantity and only as often as necessary. Finally, not forgetting what is perhaps the most important, a happy frame of mind. (c)1998 Dr. Bradley Kuhns.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Is a Must For Anyone Interested In Alternative Medicine, July 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Essentials of Homeopathy (CD-ROM)
Dr. Kuhns book is written in laymen's terms and is easy to understand. It starts with the basics in Homeopathy and explains the concept of using this alternative medicine for one's health. In contrast, with so many other books out there using their own various Homeopthic combinations, this book takes one through the actual homeopathic single remedies and how they are used for various illness and disease. I would recommend this CD-ROM, book for anyone that keeps an alternative medicine library.
