The end-all orthopedic reference for primary care,
By
This review is from: Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
There is no need for another orthopedic reference on my bookshelf.
Essentials (3rd ed.) is highly visual, easy to search, and quick to browse. Arranged by anatomic regions, the book reviews pertinent anatomy, then discusses the examination. Each section is suborganized by disease state, and clearly illustrates the maneuvers used to diagnose each problem. Finally, treatments and procedures are described with illustrations, photographs. Each includes relevent ICD and CPT codes. There are complete libraries of patient handouts (which are also included on the accompanying DVD in adobe acrobat format). As a family physician, I see a tremendous amount of orthopedic issues in my office, and Essentials has been a great resource for both me and my patients.

A ER intern's review,
This review is from: Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
As a 1st year ER resident, I picked this book up to supplement my knowledge on basic musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries. The text does a wonderful job of illustrating proper physical exam skills, as well as covering a broad range of injuries commonly found in the ED. The specific topics are concise and in depth in terms of diagnosing musculoskeletal conditions. However, I felt the general orthopedics section didn't contain any new information that a fourth year medical student hasn't already covered at some point. And I was somewhat disappointed in the treatment and red flag sections on each condition, as I felt they were much too brief. That being said, I was happy with my purchase and have learned a great deal in diagnosing the various MSK conditions found in the ED, while supplementing treatment options with other texts.

KINDLE EDITION IS WEAK,

This review is from: Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care (3rd Edition) (Kindle Edition)
While this text is an excellent resource for the primary care physician, the kindle edition is terrible. There is no links or available table of contents, and extremely difficult to find a specific chapter as there is no guidence as to where it exists. I will change my review when a TOC is added (come on, this is a basic function of an e-book).

Excellent,

This is a terrific book. Like the previous reviewer, I am deducting a point for the films not being what they could have been. Also, the print out exercise instructions were not as good as I hoped...but still useful...

Excellent for the right doctor, not an orthopaedist,
This review is from: Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
I picked this book up before doing some orthopaedic rotations with the idea that it would help me master the subject and I have to say that it is an excellent book! However, 1-2 weeks into my rotation, I realized that it was going to be a very expensive dust collector. The problem lies in that it is a book build for a family practitioner and not an orthopaedist. The book even has a quick blurt at the end of each disease telling you when to refer to an orthopaedist, and what clinic signs are red flags. So, if you are managing ankle sprains or gout management but not performing surgery, this is the book for you!

I'm interested in primary care sports medicine and this book is a great resource for me. Great for examinations, differentials and treatments. The really good thing about it is the end of each section shows what exercises/PT should be done and the included DVD can print this out as a patient handout. The only weak point is that the anatomy is a little sketchy so you would need to read another text to get that down.

This is an amazing text. It breaks down many common injuries and explains how they are treated. It is incredible.

Very Informative,

I am a College student working with a Hand and Upper extremity microsurgeon for the summer and this book is fantastic. It has allowed me to brush-up on disorders of the hand/and wrist(it has a dedicated section) and be more aware of what is happening without direct explanation from the surgeon. 5 stars to a very informative and easy to use text.

I am a recent graduate from a family practice residency. I used this book in residency and ordered one soon thereafter to use in my own practice. The patient exercise handouts on the CD are excellent.
