Best Step-By-Step Lessons for Learning PageMaker 7,
By Sarah Peterson (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Essentials of Adobe PageMaker 7 "Skills and Drills" Learning (Spiral-bound)
Once again I find myself singing the praises for IconLogic books. It seems with every IconLogic book I use, I find they outdo themselves.I needed to get up and running with PageMaker in a hurry. I was hoping IconLogic had a book about PageMaker. Yayyyy! They did. I can guarantee one thing if you buy the book and go through all of the lessons: after a few days you WILL be ready to work with PageMaker on your own. My only criticism of past IconLogic books is that they didn't cover advanced stuff. Not so with this one--it has it all. I am now comfortable with style sheets, master pages, templates, html, layers, process color, the plug-ins, pdf, and mail merge. And I loved the labs! They kept me on my toes and made me prove I knew what I was doing. Great, great job guys! Keep em coming.

Black and White, It's Just Right,

I never do this. I never spend time writing reviews. But based on a previous review posted here, I almost didn't buy this book. (I'm talking about the review about the book's lack of color.) I asked myself if color pages in a tutorial really mattered to me. My final analysis: sure, color would make the book look prettier, but if the book enabled me to learn Pagemaker, I'd overlook the color thing. I'd be bummed if this were a black and white Photoshop book, who I didn't think a black and white desktop publishing tutorial would be a problem.I just finished going through the book. Final grade: A+++. This book does not put on airs, and it's a great tool for teaching yourself PageMaker. The same person who was unhappy with the book's lack of color pages made it seem like the lessons are bland and you don't work with color. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the lessons are fun. You learn to create a newsletter (The Weekly Winer) and learn style sheets and master pages at the same time. I had a blast!!!!!! I would recommend this book for anyone who needs a kickstart with PageMaker.

I found the book most remarkable. Icon Logic books are truly unique! Straightforward.....effective....uncomplicated! I am very pleased with the book. Very practical! You get down to business right away. Easy to understand language and fun to work with. I recommend this book to anyone who has little time at their disposal but need to learn the skills of Pagemaker real fast.

I had never worked with PageMaker before and wanted to get up-and-running fairly quickly. This book helped a lot.The lessons are clear and organized well. After each major section there is a "lab" where you apply what you've learned. My only complaint with the labs is that there are not always pictures to compare your work with. Other than that I found the book/instructions quite easy to follow and now feel that I could begin working with PageMaker to create documents for our office. I will be getting another PageMaker reference book for more details instructions but plan on keeping this one as a quick reference.

All The Knowledge You Need,

I have read many tech books in my career. This book was by far the best of the lot. If you are looking for a book with lots of pretty color pictures and no substance, this is not the book for you. I too have been taken in by books with glitzy photos but lacked any real ability to teach and I still find myself regretting the high dollars I spent on them.I will from this point on, always check ICON LOGIC first to see if they have the training I need. I have never experienced such matter of fact training. I went from knowing nothing about the subject of Pagemaker to putting together a 90 page catalog for my employer. A big plus is that when I did have questions, I just sent an email and had an answer within the day. If your looking for a book to decorate your bookshelf with, keep looking. If your looking for training that will take you further than most tech books, buy this book.

Cuts to the Chase!,

I've used the Icon Logic training manual for PageMaker 7 with great success, very easy to understand (best format I've seen for a training manual). I'm hooked on the Icon Logic training approach...because its hands on and it works, nothing else available out there cuts to the chase as efficiently as the Icon Logic manuals do.

The go-to guide for learning PageMaker 7 from scratch,
By
This review is from: Essentials of Adobe PageMaker 7 "Skills and Drills" Learning (Spiral-bound)
This is quite possibly the best approach to a training guide I've seen for a software program. Very concise and clear with hands-on exercises. The graphics could be crisper, but after a few pages, the black-and-white illustrations were not a distraction at all. I also applaud the fact that the book is spiral bound, which allows you to lay the book down next to the keyboard and follow along. Using this book in conjunction with the Visual Quickstart Guide has made me a competent, skilled PageMaker user in just a few weeks. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn PageMaker from scratch.

Extremely helpful and Very Practical,
This review is from: Essentials of Adobe PageMaker 7 "Skills and Drills" Learning (Spiral-bound)
I recently became a volunteer editor for two publications and it was suggested to me to learn the program Pagemaker 7, since that was used on prior publications. Though I did get the program, it was very hard to learn from the self help section. I came across Kevin Siegel's book while searching on Amazon, bought the book and I am amazed in such short time with what I have been able to understand, learn and remember and more importantly, put to use. I just wish there was a similar book by Mr. Siegel on Photoshop. This is the book you should get if you want to learn Pagemaker 7 the "right" way.

Kevin Seigel has put together the simplest, handiest, user- friendliest book I can imagine on Pagemaker and I recommend it to everybody who has the software as a basic reference. I have always considered myself to be too impatient to learn Pagemaker. I've taken Pagemaker classes and felt like I failed & they failed because they're so boring and it all seems so easy, but when I leave class I forget it all and none of the manuals or handouts are very good and when I try to put a page together I just get upset. But this book is so step by step and basic, if you just do it, take it lesson by lesson, you'll find yourself understanding how the program works and what it can do, at least enough to accomplish whatever project you're working on. I'm happy to say that the knowledge builds on itself and I actually feel that I'm gaining some proficiency in Pagemaker!Do yourself a big favor and buy this book.
