This programed self instruction book includes all of the basic information needed to ground a nurse in Perioperative Nursing. I have used both the first and second editions with new staff and have found it to be an excellent introduction to the Operating Room

I used this book to study for my CNOR..in December I passed. I was not impressed with the questions on the CD. The format does not really match what you will find on the CNOR exam or CNOR practice questions you can purchase from AORN. The book itself is easy to navaigate and I used it as a reference in my studing. It covers everything having to do with basic periop practice.

This is definitely a good introduction to perioperative nursing, and any nurse who is new to the operating room environment should give it a read. The author does a nice job presenting the basic topics one needs to understand when working as a perioperative nurse. The chapters are designed in an outline format and there are good review questions and post tests. There are also competency checklists, which is good for the nurse educator to use when evaluating learning. You could use this book as a "self learning" tool, but that should be done in conjuction with some type of formal orientation to the complex world of the operating room and under the direction of a nurse educator or seasoned perioperative nurse. This book could be used as a basic prep for the CNOR, but you would be better off using "Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery" or some other CNOR prep guide. This text is definitely for beginners; although, it can be used as a review and resource for any operating room nurse.
