This is a big book with a lot of information, and is basically an overview of school psychology and testing in general. It covers everything from the history of the field, training requirements, the basics of assessment and report writing, plus information on the most commonly used tests by domain: sensorimotor function, visuospatial and auditory processing, learning and memory, executive function, attention and working memory, speed and fluency, language skills, and academic achievement.

That said, the book is way too much of a survey overview to be useful to someone who actually is working as a school psychologist and conducting assessments. Someone in that role would likely find the other books in this series far more helpful, since they go into incredibly useful detail for individual test instruments on things like ways in which you can and can't adapt testing protocols for an individual, and how to interpret one test result in the context of others. And while I could definitely see an overview book like this being useful to consumers of school psychology assessments -- ie, the special education teachers and IEP case managers who need to translate those assessment results into workable plans for a student, they would need to wade through a lot here to find the parts that were useful for them. And that's basically how I used the book myself --in research, I don't conduct these assessments myself but I do need to have a good understanding of what constructs we're trying to measure and which instruments will do the best job of getting at those for our populations and with our logistical constraints. This book truly has some useful info there, and despite how much wading I have to do to find the info I need, it is far more consistently accurate than what I'd come across by just googling. It would also be a good book for someone considering going into the field, and wanting to learn more about it first.

Dr. David Miller's entry into the Essentials series is yet another useful member of these Wiley texts. His `Essentials of School Neuropsychological Assessment' is an easy read, and does a solid job of merging the fields of pediatric neuropsychology and school psychology via a working (doctoral or specialist level) school psychology bent.

The book features a solid theoretical and historical background for both these fields, with specific emphasis on understanding neuropsychological evaluation from an evidence-based treatment perspective. Of particular note is Dr. Miller's reference to the lack of utility of many clinical neuropsychology reports in an education setting. In specific, how this lack of external validity is often frustrating for the parent, school and - most importantly - detrimental in meeting the needs of the child.

Thus, the book reasons for school psychologists to develop expertise in neuropsychological assessment, and with it link this assessment type to day-to-day, educational planning. To elaborate, there is an entire chapter in `Essentials of School Neuropsychological Assessment' dedicated to determining when a referral is appropriate for neuropsychological assessment, noting that not every referral for special education is going to warrant this level of specialty evaluation and/or is practical (given the high case loads of most school psychologists).

Further, the author presents a number of excellent case examples to walk a practitioner through the entire assessment process. These case examples do wonders in fleshing out the theoretical underpinnings behind such assessments.

This Second Edition of "Essentials of school neuropsychological assessment" focuses as the title suggests on neuropsychological testing in schools. The book is tailored to fit school settings, and provides a current and succinct overview of the field of school neuropsychology with workable input on the application of neuropsychological assessment principles in schools. It accentuates the use of major neuropsychological tests batteries for children, like the NEPSY-II, WISC-IV Integrated, and D-KEFS. The book will also help the clinician in identifying the need for testing as well as with the selection of the appropriate testing instrument. The volume also comes with a CD that provides sample case studies and database of neuropsychological tests. This book will be handy for school psychologists and other clinicians who conduct school assessments and reports in a school setting.

Education professionals who have limited to intensive involvement in the psychological health of children face, needless to say, a lot of options when it comes to neuropsychological tests. This book seeks to provide solid information on testing in the school setting and is aimed at a wide range of practitioners.

I found the information here nicely organized and very helpful. One of the methods used by the book is case studies, these examples were well-chosen and compelling.

This book performs a couple of roles -- it is both a book that can educate the school professional and a reference designed to help the busy educator find information quickly. It manages to do both of these things quite well. For example, there are Fast Reference sections and "Cautions" in the book which will be appreciated by anyone who needs to do important things with speed.
