More About the Author

I'm an author, speaker, award-winning CIO and principal at Center for Systems Innovation [c4si]. My work combines cloud computing and business agility with systems thinking and game theory to redesign and reinvigorate business operations. I have advised and mentored development teams at Microsoft Xbox, Starbucks Coffee Company, U.S. Navy Medical Logistics Command and numerous smaller companies. See my SCM Globe supply chain simulation app for an example of applying video game techniques to solve real world supply chain problems.

In addition to my interest in business and technology, I'm a student of history (Roman and Modern history in particular). We're going through an epic cultural and social shift on a global scale right now. Having historical perspective is a big help to make sense of what is happening.

Previously I was chief information officer (CIO) of a North American distribution organization where I developed a suite of supply chain applications that transformed the company's operations and revenue model. For this work I won the CIO 100 Award for resourcefulness, the InformationWeek 500 Award for innovation, and the Premier 100 Award for career achievement.

I earned my MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management with a major in finance and management information systems. I'm author of several business and technical books. My newest business book is Enterprise Games: Using Game Mechanics to Build a Better Business. My newest historical fiction book is Leptis Magna: Emperor's Dream on the Edge of the Desert.

I have been managing complex supply chains for the aerospace industry for at least a couple of decades and have installed collaborative supply chain applications at several airlines and OEMs. I find "Essentials of Supply Chain Management" a refreshing, easy, and informative read for the practitioner. Having recently gone through several text books written by academicians I find that even the best of them lacked the touch and the feel of real life supply chain issues. Most hands on managers however need to know the latest technologies and best business practices that might help them solve real life problems. Michael Hugo's book comes close to achieving that goal. The simulation model at [...] works hand in hand with the book. It allows paractioners the opportunity to put to test some of the concepts described in the book. The book and the simulation model can but does not have to be used concurrently to help managers formulate and test assumptions relevant to their own operation. With customer experience at the top of SCM manager's agenda these days, this book shines a light on a road not strictly dedicated to the theory of constraints with a single minded focus on maximizing throughput. More on the simulation model at [...]

I purchased Mr. Hugo's book after reading other recommendation on a LinkedIn posting. As an executive search consultant I had the need to ramp up to supply chain management in hurry due to a pharmaceutical client's request.

In a previous life (15 years ago) I was a Director of Ops for a Fortune 500 company. As such I was rusty and in a hurry to be educated. I found this book to be ideal to satisfy both objectives. I feel more confident and energized to speak with clients and candidates alike and have found new means to utilize supply chain in my own business.

I found this to be an excellent book for my bachelor-degree students who aspire to be supply chain managers. As a professor at a private institution of higher learning in Paris (16th), I use this book in my classroom. It covers the subject of supply chain management in an easy-to-read format, with lots of visual graphics that make good powerpoint presentations. It also comes with a stimulation game that students can use for hands-on activities. The case studies are also useful for in-class homework.

Nearing completion of this book "Essentials of Supply Chain Management". I purchased it from Amazon to help prep me for job interviews for my post-military career. I will be off active duty in February 2014. I have 20 years of experience in Supply Chain Logistics Management in the Navy including combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan along with two tours in the Horn of Africa. It's a great book and should give me the knowledge, support and confidence that I need going into interviews. One of the biggest challenges is that the software we use in the Military- for inventory management, warehouse management, tracking, etc, is not the same as those used in the civilian sector, i.e. Oracle BI, SAP ERP, etc- but it's similar. I'm sure the civilian companies know this, nevertheless, I'm still getting calls to interview. I took up the author's offer in his book to e-mail him and I was happy when he replied to my e-mail. He assured me that the software is constantly changing and not to worry to much about it as software can learned but to focus on the fundamentals. It was great advice. Know that when you're buying this great book, you're also buying access to its author....who by my experience, appears to be a solid-gold person.

I am working on my MBA and will then be furthering my education in Supply Chain Management. I ordered this book to help give me a good overview of the industry prior to starting course work on the subject. It has been an excellent read and very informative. I found it to be an easy book to read, interesting, and very good at laying out the concepts associated with SCM. It was very beneficial to me and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get into SCM or for someone that already has some experience, but would like to dive a little deeper in to it.
