From Bach to Led Zep to Traditional Mexican Son and Beyond, November 8, 2007
This review is from: Esta Tierra Es Tuya (This Land Is Your Land) (Audio CD)
These guys are wonderful. Mexican immigrants to Chicago, they manage on this one album to move from several lively and lovely traditional Mexican songs (Son, Mariachi, and digging even deeper into the roots of ancient Mexico) through a terrific jarocho version of a Brandenburg Concerto, to Woody Guthrie's This Land is Your Land (which sounds way cool in Spanish) and even a pretty good (Aztec) version of Led Zeppelin's Four Sticks. These guys use over seventy different acoustic instruments on the album, including guitarrón, vihuela, guitar, fiddle, and harp. The sound is great, the breadth is astounding, and the album is an amazing cross-cultural-intercultural entertainment. Lots of fun and great listening. Esta Tierra Es Tuya (This Land Is Your Land)

A lively, experimental, and toe-tapping album, July 8, 2007
This review is from: Esta Tierra Es Tuya (This Land Is Your Land) (Audio CD)
Esta Tierra Es Tuya (translation: This Land Is Your Land) is the latest music CD release by Sones de Mexico, and a listening experience that draws upon rock, folk, and Western classical elements as well as Mexican culture. Created entirely with acoustics - no synthesizers at all! - Esta Tierra Es Tuya includes both traditional and original songs: Yo Vendo Unos Ojos Negros (5:17), Esta Tierra Es Tuya (3:27), La Presumida (5:00), Tabasco Suite (4:11), Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major (5:07), La Rabia (4:31), Inchapikua (Danza de las Mariposas) (4:30), Eres Bella Flor (2:54), Jarabe Planeco (4:07), La Llorona (4:42), Four Sticks (4:32), Los Panaderos (6:29), four interludes, and an epilogue. A lively, experimental, and toe-tapping album that reclaims the vibrancy of Mexican music, especially acoustic guitar and mariachi music, from the negative stereotypes of American popular culture. Highly recommended.

El Musico Bonito, December 23, 2007
This review is from: Esta Tierra Es Tuya (This Land Is Your Land) (Audio CD)
Truly outstanding. Where else can you hear "La Llorona" and a Brandenburg Concerto on the same disc? The musicians are men and women of many talents, their choice of selections interesting, varied, and well-performed. "This Land is Your Land" in Spanish is to the point and moving to hear. I haven't taken it off my CD player since I got it. Vivas Sones!
