AL RE-PALO.,
By Andamio Pijuan "jEvE" (Montevideo, Uruguay) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bang Bang Estas Liquidado (Audio CD)
Caretas abstenerse.

Bang! Bang! Is One Of Their Best!,
By Chappa "Larcha" (Olympus Mons, Mars) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bang Bang Estas Liquidado (Audio CD)
From my country of Argentina, Patricio Rey y sus Redonditos de Ricota is one of the most popular bands there and for me one of the best (although my all-time favorite one is pop/reggae group Los Pericos). It is an excellent genre bridging type of band that seems to be influenced by 70's classic rock, late 60's psychedelia, and punk/post-punk/new-wave all at the same time. In 1989 "Bang Bang! Estas Liquidado" was released and it is their fourth studio album and it's my second favorite right behind 1991's "La Mosca y La Sopa" which I will always think it's the best work the band ever did. Even though it consists of only nine songs, all of them are strong. The line-up featured is the classic one with Carlos Indio Solari on vocals (who also writes the lyrics), Skay Beilinson on guitar, Semilla Bucciarelli on bass, Sergio Dawi on saxophone, and Walter Sidotti on drums.
The starting point is "Héroe Del Whisky", a fast-paced heavy funk rock number with a killer riff and rhythm guitar from Beilinson, notable bass lines from Bucciarelli, and the steady drumming of Sidotti. A great LP introduction with notable playing from all members but I'll go ahead and say that this tune actually sounds better live on the album "En Directo". Next comes "Rock Para Los Dientes" with lyrics that appear to talk about drugs and musically, it shows guitarist Beilinson's interest in reggae/dub styled rhythms. The outro bridge features cool sax from Dawi. Track number three is a winner for me: "La Parabellum Del Buen Psicópata". This is the longest song on the LP clocking at nearly six minutes with Solari's voice in great form and the intro mixolydian riff is awesome! It's played in the key of D and it has a psychedelic late 60's feel to it, kind of like the mixolydian intro riff in The Beatles' "I Want Tell You" from the Revolver LP. Great chord progression on the verse: D, C, B, Bb - similar in feel to Cream's "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" supporting the idea that it has that late 60's rock vibe. The chorus is also cool and I like that four single note ascending figure Bb-C-D-E. In the middle there's a cool mixolydian solo that has an anthemic feel to it; sounds like some of the solos that Grateful Dead's guitarist Jerry Garcia used to play during the late 60's on some of the live extended improvisations. This is my favorite part of the song! If you are a fan of The Greatful Dead, then you should appreciate this tune a lot. Great raga-rock solo! It's a great tune that The Dead never wrote! Dawi's saxophone comes to the fore near the end making for a satisfactory coda. Afterwards comes "Un Pac-man En El Savoy" where the band brings forward a somewhat blues-rock type of sound. The main minor key guitar/sax melody repeated throughout is catchy and for me the song has a Deep Purple-ish vibe mostly because of the fact that guitarist Beilinson plays single notes instead of chords throughout most of the track and that marriage of blues-rock groove with a minor key based melody. However, the presence of the saxophone adds a unique touch making it sound different from that group. Something interesting happens on the next track: the straightforward rock of "Nadie Es Perfecto". It's the album's shortest song at about 2:22 and musically, it recalls the style of Aerosmith and their number "Mama Kin" from their debut. If you are familiar with the Aerosmith number, then this will put a smile in your face! I like how the arrangement takes the song's main chords to a higher key during the saxophone solo. This is a songwriting trick that became quite popular during the late 70's era with punk/new wave bands, for example listen to the song "Shot By Both Sides" by the group Magazine. This proves how diverse this band is, in this case, mixing classic rock with punk/new wave to great effect! Anyway now it's on to song number six: Esa Estrella Era Mi Lujo" which is a haunting folk-rock type of thing that brings to mind the type of mood found on the band's 1986 sophomore album "Oktubre" and definitely one of their most underrated songs. Excellent lead guitar melody! I hope you kept the name of Aerosmith in your mind because "Maldición Va A Ser Un Día Hermoso" (running time: 2:27) sounds like it could have been written by them during their early period, in this case recalling "Same Old Song And Dance" a little bit! A great three-chord blues-rock track with cool saxophone from Dawi but there's no guitar solo from Beilinson. I wish it was longer! The mood shifts in "Ropa Sucia", a mid-tempo heavy metal number with killer rhythm guitar and a somewhat dark atmosphere. The sax on the chorus adds a nice touch. One of the best, but wait, the last song "Nuestro Amo Juega Al Esclavo" is a masterpiece too! It starts with an apparently Scottish bagpipe music inspired intro complete with a military drum roll from drummer Sidotti. Guitarist Beilinson brings back the raga-rock with the mixolydian phrasings here too and Solari's vocals make the composition stand out as a memorable exit. To sum up, this is one of Patricio Rey's best CDs so if you would like to check them out, "Bang! Bang!..." is a good place to start you collection. Thanks for taking the time to read! Later...
