From the Manufacturer

How high will a High-Flier go? The answer is OUTTA SIGHT. No one knows for sure. Or maybe you do? The Estes Hi-Flier is an ultra high performance model rocket with tons of attitude. Be sure and keep your eye on this stream-lined missile as it climbs to amazing heights over 1,600 ' (488 m), OK, we told you, and recovers with a fluorescent orange streamer. Watch it climb and climb and climb and well, you get the idea. The Hi-Flier is a Skill Level 1 kit that can easily be built in one afternoon. This sleek rocket stands a full 12 " (25.4 cm) tall and features laser cut balsa fins, one piece body tube and a plastic nose cone for outstanding durability. This trim, high flying rocket launches on any of our powerful Estes standard engines. The Hi-Flier is one of the most extreme, super performance model rockets you can own. This rocket is built for speed and for height. It is small with a very durable fin system. It is not a difficult rocket to make and it will take you about an hour to make it - depending on glue drying time. Everything about it is designed to minimize weight without sacrificing strength so it can go fast and high.
It has a streamer rather than a parachute which is a good thing because of the height it attains. With a parachute it could very well sail off quite a distance from your launch zone.
I like the solid fin system. They are stronger than normal. I found the recommended painting scheme to be a bit too much, even though I did it by the suggested way. You might just want to spray paint the whole thing one solid color.
Nice little rocket, cheap and fast.
Remember that this is just a rocket. You still have to purchase engines, wadding and a launcher if you are just starting out in the hobby.

We bought this rocket because we wanted to see how high we could send a rocket and - for less than $10 - if we lost it... well, no big deal. The rocket was pretty simple to assemble; it's not much more than a nosecone with fins. We painted it a solid fluorescent orange so we could see it from a distance. The only design flaw is the body tube is a cramped fit for the engine, recovery wadding, streamer and nosecone. Often, the nosecone is sticking out a quarter inch because we can't shove it in all the way.

So far, we've launched it a dozen times. On an Estes A-8-3 engine, the rocket flies almost out of sight. Often times we can only track it by the trail of smoke. The streamer recovery is adequate; except for some black scuffs and one chip in the paint, the rocket is in the same condition it was when it was first built. It is simple to set up, cheap to fly and pretty durable. We've definitely got our money's worth out of it!

My daughter's first rocket build (age 9). My son's alpha 3 fell about 40' from the launchpad with a B engine. The same engine propelled the Hi Flier completely out of sight...well over 1000'. Heard the streamer deploy, but the rocket did not have a contrasting color to it. I would recommend painting this a Hunter Orange or the like.

Winds were calm. 30 mins spent on a recovery, to no avail. Kids now hooked on rocketry.

The hi-flyer lives up to its name, a bit too well! I put it together so carefully and painted it this cool yellow on black pattern. Just after the paint dried I ran out to the field to launch it. We did a few test launches on a different low flying rocket, just to get a sense of the wind conditions. It was dead calm. Unable to constrain myself I loaded a C6 and launched. I barely saw it go up, and never saw it again. Great model and a real thrill, just don't put too much effort into it!

I must second the "Find a big field" posts -- almost lost it on my first launch when the wind drifted it over a fence. Was able to recover, but went and found a big field and launched it with C engines. Super fun. This rocket got me into the hobby, and I have now assembled 3 other rockets (most recent a 2-stager that I'm still painting and hoping to launch this weekend. Definitely recommend.

This rocket really flies high, as its name suggests. I bought it for my 6 year old son, and he and I put it together (okay, mostly me). We painted it like the picture, and it looks great. I used a silver sharpie to color the silver triangles on the fins, and that worked well. I'm not sure I have the fins on straight, however, since it seems to have a spin, but it goes straight up and very high, making for an exciting launch.

I got this for a friends kids birthday and we had so much fun building and launching them. You have to buy the engines and wadding and launch pad but if this is something you want to do, buy a bulk package and go have fun.
