I have axolotls, and I was having a difficult time finding a sand <1mm in size that was smooth. Although this sand isn't as smooth as I thought it would be, it is still acceptable for axolotls, which are bottom dwellers.

I gave it 5 stars because:
a) it's the only black sand I could find and be confident that it would not harm my axolotls' undersides, or insides from accidental ingestion, as well as not alter the water parameters.
b) I got it at a great price
c) Although the dealer I got it through messed up my order a couple of times, they were prompt in fixing it and offered compensation, so overall service was pleasant.
d) it didn't require a lot of rinsing which a good chunk of black sands do. The sand did get stuck to bubbles and thus floated to the top or stayed on the bottom, but it is a minor inconvenience that is easily fixed. Either pop the bubbles yourself or whatever bottom dweller you have will jostle the sand and do it for you.
e) it's heavy enough that if I siphon carefully over top, it won't get sucked up

I'm happy, my axolotls are happy, so overall, I love it :)

Sand is VERY soft and black. Its heavy like Pool filter sand, and is rounded. I used this as a cap for a planted substrate. I highly recommend this. Its a darker true black than the picture. This comes in individual 5 pound bags marked Stoney River. Some of it does float when first filling your tank, just smack the water lightly and the sand falls. I did this as it was filling and I have had no problems. See picture.

Excellent quality. This stuff was amazing. Sunk pretty quickly and didn't make the water too cloudy. I could turn the filters on within two hours after adding the sand. Would buy again, great price. My polypteri and mormyrids love it.

Looks good, easy to clean, stays put at the bottom, does not cloud the tank if rinsed properly. Fish LOVE digging in it.
