Estimating in Building Construction (6th Edition) (Purchased on 01/26/2010) by Frank R. Dagostino,

The book itself is OK, given that it covers a dry but vital subject if one wants to do construction. On the other hand, it could be better written and the questions could be better framed.

When purchased new, this textbook comes with a set of drawings. The drawings are vital to the comprehension of the subject matter in the text. However, the drawings were NOT included with this purchase, and that information was NOT included in the description. Very misleading and disappointing!

This is a very good book for people from differente backgrounds thata are just starting in the construction field. It shows step-by-step, clear instructions on how to make calculations for takeoffs of most all components of buildings, and illustrates how all of the assembly gets put together into the production of a bid.
In this book I found help for my estimating class, but it also gave me a well-rounded understanding of what is involved in constructing a structure.

This was a well thought out book; I was required to purchase it for an Estimating College course, and found it to be self explanatory. This would be an invaluable book for any contractor wanting to improve their estimating abilities, and a must read for general contractors looking to refine their bidding techniques.

Yes this book contains just about every material involved in building a structure and has many formulas to figure out anything you could possibly imagine, from materials to labor. The downfall is in the review questions and exercises dealing with the provided blueprints, which are very vague and difficult to interpret, thus making any of your estimating practice next to useless. There's got to be a better book out there...

A good cost estimating overview - but lacking in analysis of productivity and profit analysis.,

This review is from: Estimating in Building Construction (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
The chapters, which roughly correspond to the CSI format, was a good structure. The coverage of each of the topics was competent and understandable.
Lacking was analysis of labor productivity which is usually the largest cost determinant for most line items. The discussion of profit caluclation was divorced from the real world - the actual calculation method is as detailed as calculation as any other line item. Some discusion of conceptual or rough order of magnitude estmating would have been helpful. This skill is used to determine if a project is worth bidding, so must be discussed a little.Choosing Project Success - A Guide for Building Professionals
