Book Description

April 1, 1991
Every interior designer must estimate costs for fabric and other materials. However, poor estimating puts many good designers out of business either because they do not calculate the right amount of material needed or they do not understand the scheduling for specifying the material, getting it in, getting it to the shop and getting into finished products. This book attempts to provide a sensible guide that can be followed by designers and is supplemented by drawings, photographs and charts. Included are chapters on estimating for bedcoverings, carpeting, drapery, tablecloths, paint, wallpapers and upholstery. The information in this book can make the difference between success and failure in the interior design profession.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sampson, a practicing interior designer for 25 years, has enlarged her previous edition of this book (Watson-Guptill, 1991), which has become a standard text in many interior design schools. As before, she discusses how to estimate the cost of materials and labor required for the installation or application of paint, wall coverings, carpeting, drapery, bed coverings, and tablecloths with an expanded chapter on upholstery and an additional chapter on hard flooring, all illustrated with clear line drawings. Sample work orders are provided, with blank ones moved from an appendix to each applicable chapter. Although designed for students and professional interior designers, large public library collections will find this book useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great estimating guide, October 23, 2002

Good for people just entering the interior design business, where they're unsure of how to estimate costs for various items. This takes you through it all, pretty much step-by-step. It's complete with diagrams and examples of schedules that you'd write up to pass on to painters, tilers, and the like. The only disadvantage is that I have to translate all the measurements, as they're all in yards and feet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Estimating for Interior Designers, September 14, 2007
The information has dated photos and not comprehensive. No charts, and estimates in developing concepts and designs based upon square footage. Where is the estimating for budgeting purposes? Ok for the library and for soft goods.
