5.0 out of 5 stars A True Fusion of Soulful Rock and Rumba Flamenca
Being a Spaniard raised in the U.S. I think that I can truly, knowing both cultures, give a fair assessment of ESTOPA. I disagree with the man who reviewed ESTOPA as a mere boy band. This band is gritty, from Spain's urban working class culture, if they were from the UK they'd be gritty Eastender type guys, if they were a band from the US they'd be thought more as Third...

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Fusion of Soulful Rock and Rumba Flamenca, January 30, 2002

Being a Spaniard raised in the U.S. I think that I can truly, knowing both cultures, give a fair assessment of ESTOPA. I disagree with the man who reviewed ESTOPA as a mere boy band. This band is gritty, from Spain's urban working class culture, if they were from the UK they'd be gritty Eastender type guys, if they were a band from the US they'd be thought more as Third Eye Blind or the Counting Crows. However, they are none of these because they are from Spain so they have managed to mix soulful hardhitting rock tones with rumba flamenca. They have transformed "rock en español" from merely being rock sung in Spanish, to rock with real rumba flamenca backbeats and melded the actual two forms of music. Furthermore, there lyrics is truly poetic. Reading the lyrics alone without the music is a true pleasure. Not having been back in Spain over a year I had unfortunately missed this wonderful group. I saw there video on MTV in español and was hooked, not just by the music, and lyrics but also by the soulful, heart felt interpretation of David Muñoz. David si leés esto tienes una fan en EEUU que piensa que eres uno de los mas intensos interpretes en el mundo de la musica.

This album, together with Destrangis, their sophmore album, comprise one of the funkiest and funnest pop releases of the last two years. The Lyrics are funny but often deep and moving. The style is varied and the sound is flamenco but with a big twist. You dont have anything like this this in your collection, i guarantee it. Even the 30 second cuts you get on Amazon will give you some idea of what you are in for. Happy listening...

5.0 out of 5 stars Estopa... Leaders of the new Rhumba!, April 22, 2001

This band just hit 1 million copies sold in Spain and it is easy to see why. Made up of the Munoz brothers (2 of them), they mix the Spanish Rhumba with Pop and Rock. Even some salsa is evident in one song. They have really come up with something quite distinctive and catchy. You can't but help sing their songs. I played it for a friend and we drove down a freeway with the windows opened and Estopa blaring... it felt so right. They are now in the elite one million sellers club with Rosana, Alejandro Sanz, La Oreja De Van Gogh, etc. Some songs are brilliantly straightforward such as "Tu Calorro" which is a brilliant Rhumba/pop hybrid. But then there are songs such as "Me Falta El Aliento" which starts off as a rock/pop ballad, but then once it hits the chorus becomes a hard hitting Rhumba which you cannot get out of your head. "Sume y Sigue" is a lovely salsa influenced track which again is so catchy will drive you nuts. But my favourite track is the perfectly executed "Poquito a Poco", Estopa's view on smoking. Taking from the point of a smoker it describes his feelings and why he does it and what it is doing it to him. The brilliance in it is not just the words but the way they sing it, the way the music perfectly matches the smoking mood. The lead singer changes his voice to emit a throat cancer victim when he sings the chorus, as well as the tempo becoming slower during the chorus. Ideas come together perfectly for this song and it really is something to behold. Estopa, gracias caballeros!

5.0 out of 5 stars Boy-band?! Are you guys nuts!, November 17, 2001
This review is from: Estopa (Audio CD)
Does the person who wrote the Amazon editorial review really know what Estopa is about? Yes, the band IS comprised of two men (brothers no less), but they are no where near being in the same genre or in the same style as America's "boy bands." In the world of "rock en español", these guys have proved to be like a much-needed, fresh breeze...an intoxicating sound. Not to mention the lyrics and vocals!

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is defining a generation., July 27, 2001

"Estopa" is one of those once- or twice-a-decade breakthroughs that tirelessly spins off hit after hit, vaults an act to superstardom, and influences a generation of new artists. Their stroke of inspiration: combine the rootsy kick of flamenco with modern, intense, intimate lyrics and a dash of blues-based rock and alternative. The songs are mainly about lust and love but offer a stark take on drug abuse in "Exiliado En El Lavabo." If you like the raw power of the music but don't speak Spanish, it's worth your while to get a Spanish dictionary - the lyrics are that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars viva estopa!, July 31, 2001

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing., May 18, 2005
This review is from: Estopa (Audio CD)
This is just to correct the amazon review which says that Estopa is compared to "Christina Aguilera and Ricky Martin, as well as devotees of the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync". Its totally the other way around, this is not commercial pop, this is something between alternative rock and fused world beats, and impressive lyrics.

Along with "La Calle es Tuya?" this is the best of Estopa. Very solid songs all the way through the album. Really fun and enjoyable stuff that you want to listen to over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just couldn't stop playing it!!, October 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Estopa (Audio CD)
The CD proves to be too good for it to be the bands first album. Although the interpreters are very young, they keep the escence of true music and mix it with modern lirics that prove to be both bold and folkloric great for listening. I truly recommend this for spanish music lovers and for all. Most of all, the second CD "Destrangis", is a sequel that merits the same appreciation.
