As a tradesmen I go out of my way to buy American made products and Estwing produces quality. That being said it does exactly what you expect. The only minor modification I made is I added grip tape around the handle as I found the wood slippery

Deadhead Rubber Mallets - 31701 18oz. non-marring deadhead rubber mall

This is one of the best deadhead rubber mallets that you can buy. Estwing is a USA manufacturer of some of the best striking tools available. Estwing's manufacturing facility is located in the northern Illinois city of Rockford - about 90 miles northwest of Chicago. Estwing product lines are sold in leading hardware stores, home centers, and retailers throughout the United States, Canada and in many countries around the world.

Since 1923, the Estwing family and its employees have taken pride in designing and manufacturing the world's most durable, comfortable and attractive striking and struck tools. All claw hammers, axes, specialty tools and pry bars are manufactured to the highest possible standards and offer a true value to both tradesmen and craftsmen alike.

Estwing's Gray Rubber Deadhead® Mallet is bounce resistant and non-marring with a top grade hickory handle. This hammer is used for assembling furniture, setting dowels and wood projects that require non-marring blows. The Hickory Handle is milled to fit your hand without fatigue.

Some of the product features are:

--Head Material - Rubber
--Handle Material - Hickory
--Head Weight - 18 ounces (504 gm)
--Head Length - 4.5-Inches (114 mm)
--Overall Length - 14.5-Inches (368 mm)
--Face Diameter - 2.5-Inches (64 mm)
--Color - Gray
--Type - Mallet Deadhead

I've used this mallet a lot while assembling different furniture and there is enough weight where you don't have to strike very hard for the wood to conform. Driving dowels is very easy with this mallet. The mallet-head is big enough that you will not miss your target, yet it is easily controllable.
