It flies right through quite big logs without too much effort.

I can also see the possibility of using a wedge to split very knotty wood log.

At the reviewer who said soft steel is bad for a splitter, I would say if you have steel that is too hard it will crack. If you are wailing away at it with a sledge hammer it is supposed to mushroom, that is what keeps it from cracking. For example, cold chisels have soft steel where you hammer them, and hard steel at the tip. That is how these wedges are constructed. These wedges are high grade tool steel. The edge is sharp, and the wedge is long so it splits the log long before it gets stuck. At the people who say the star wedges are better, they are shorter, made in China or Mexico from crap steel, and come from the factory blunted. Pay $2 more and get the one and only wedge made in the USA.

Estwing rocks! I just wish they made more stuff instead of such a limited product line. Anyway, this wedge is efficient and does the job. I use it to split rounds about 18" in diameter and about 16-18" long. It usually splits the logs before the wedge even gets embedded up to those little things that look like dormers.

I can swing an ax, but not inside a basement. This splitter is easily driven by a small hand sledge hammer. The ears are particularly effective if the wood is not entirely dried.

I did not purchase this wedge off of Amazon but I have used it for at least a cord of wood and I am a novice when it comes to wood splitting. I have only used an axe to split wood before this but the wedge coupled with my 12 pound sledge hammer made easy work of splitting mainly oak with some other hardwoods mixed in. It took me a couple of logs to find the swinging sweet spot to get a lot of one strike splits. I only had one instance of this wedge binding up in some really knotty wood that required me to hatchet through the small remaining piece intact to get it out. I only had it bounce out of wood a few times with solid strikes and yet again it was on really knotty wood but it eventually made it through. I am not sure how long people have been using them to get it to mushroom but I was impressed with how well it held up with constant strikes from the 12 pound sledge, no significant deformations at the impact point.

This wedge works great and holds an edge well. When it comes to splitting wood, I prefer the safety and ease of a wedge and small sledge-hammer over swinging an axe or maul. This is also the only 'Made in USA' splitting wedge I could find. And like all Estwing American made tools, it is a quality product.

This wedge has been indispensable. I started splitting a lot of wood last year to fuel the wood burning stove in our new home and I could not have done it without this.

I acquired almost a cord of elm from a neighbor's tree and it is miserable stuff. The grain twists and turns so that it's basically impossible to split a log straight through. Managed to get a little system going where I open up a crack closer to the perimeter of the log with my splitting axe, then put this wedge in and go nuts on it with a sledge hammer. Heck of a work out but it's done a great job and it almost never gets stuck.
