We used it to pick the earth do dig up agates and also to break away surrounding shale to release pyrite cubes without damaging the cubes.

This is a typical Estwing construction as far as the handle and grip are concerned. The head already has the corners and edges beveled so it doesn't chip. The pick end comes to a point so if you're looking for a chisel edge this is not the tool for you. The weight works well - that is, it is sufficiently heavy to accomplish the job, but light enough not to be a burden to carry around and for easy one-handed use. The only thing I've wanted but have not yet seen is a leather carrying attachment for use with a belt; it probably exists, I just haven't found it. It would be nice if Amazon advertised the two together. I've only had this rock pick for a short while and the rocks are already yielding up their treasures!

My entire family fossil hunts. This is the best all around rock pick we have used. We bought four if that tells you anything.

This is the King of Rock Hammers - best there is. Be sure to file the corners on the head if you're going to using it on very hard rock as small splinters can fly off.

I am a first year geology student and our professor recommended Estwing hammers. I figured the investment would be worth it since I'll probably be using this bad boy for a while. A little about myself, I'm a 21-year-old female and I'm not quite muscular. I was on the fence about buying this size as opposed to the smaller 14 oz size. I figured the 14 would be easier for me to tote around all day and whatnot. But a friend showed me her 22 and it didn't appear to be all that bad. So, I made this purchase. I've already used it on a Paleontology field trip and busted up rocks for several hours straight with no problem. I definitely suggest wearing eye protection though, as the pick itself states. You never know what could happen! If you're on the fence as I was about purchasing the 22 vs the 14, I'd suggest just getting the extra weight as it helps pack a punch. All in all, I'm happy with my first rock hammer purchase. :)

I use this to sample rocks in old mines and when i am gold prospecting. I own the 16oz also. I would not use any other brand of rock hammer.

As a rock pick, this is one of the best there is. This is the 22 oz one, which is pretty heavy, and not the ideal weight for kids. The single-piece construction also means that vibration from impact travels along the shaft more noticeably than with wooden-handled hammers. On the other hand, the thick rubber grip does minimise vibration, and the construction of this hammer means it should last many times longer than two-piece hammer. The pick-end isn't ideal for fossil collecting work where a chisel-end is often more useful for working open laminar rocks like slates and shales, but using a set of chisels is better anyway.

Besides being a good geology tool, this is a great hammer for around the house and garden. Highly recommended.

I have had my Estwing for 30 years now- ever since Geology field camp as an undergrad. It has held up with no problems at all. It hasn't even needed grinding to re-point it, but then I work primarily in softer rock. It has split and chipped its share of glacial erratics, however. There are fancier looking hammers out there, but the one piece construction and molded-on grip will truly last you a life time.

The rockhammer is of excellent quality, I have tried it in both hard and soft rock. It also should last a long time.
