I bought the device to be able to use retro consoles (Sega SMS, NES, Saturn etc... all the way to GameCube) with an HDMI connection.
The consoles are all modded to support SVideo or have native SVideo support.

The good part is that I was able to get a signal on my Vizio 27' Razor Led. By default the image was stretched across the whole screen but setting the TV to "normal" rather than "full" fixed it.
It was able to render both 720p and 1080p, obviously the upscaling does not perfom a miracle and the consoles pretty much look the same as if connected directly thru the TV SVideo (if you have a plug, that is).

Some issues: the gamecube start screen has some bizarre cyan hue over the cube glass surface, the same effect is present in the OutRun game for SMS on the start screen (the already light blue screen had bizarre streaks of cyan color).
The issue of the cyan bleeding seems to be console relative (maybe due to slightly different signals) and so far I have noticed it on the GameCube and SMS only (it may be present in all consoles given the correct color triggers but then it becomes game relative).

Another small fact: the set can take input from Composite and SVideo (and HDMI as well) but it does not autoswitch so you have to push the button to cycle among the three. I would have appreciated auto sensing at least among Composite and SVideo, luckily I only have one console that output Composite so not a big deal, just something to remember.

Other than what I mentioned it appears to work fine with audio and video of quality comparable to the native SVideo signal (maybe just a little softer).

As other reviewers have said, this device does convert S-Video to HDMI 1080p and it does improve the picture noticeably, though it's not a dramatic improvement.

I did want to mention something that might be important to you. While testing mine, I set it on top of my light-oak entertainment center. It got hot enough that the four feet left multiple burn marks in the varnish. I tried all the usual methods of removing the marks but ended up having to sand them down, and then sand, re-stain, and refinish the entire top of the cabinet.

I have photos of the damage, but I don't think there's a way to show them here.

This could just be an issue with my particular device, but I doubt it. It works perfectly, and most of the time, it's not all that warm to the touch.

I still recommend the device if you want a slight improvement in your S-video picture, but if you care about the surface you're putting it on, either put taller feet on the unit or set it on a hot pad.

[Update 9/7/2013]

This may not be an issue for many purchasers, but I believe this device is removing the Closed Captioning output from my DirecTivo DVR. I get CC on the TV from other sources, and I have it turned on in the DVR, but get no CC on the TV when using the HDMI output from this device.

I was looking for a way to improve my Nintendo 64's (N64) image on my flatscreen HDTV. HDTVs lack the scanlines that CRTs had, which older game consoles relied on to convey dimensionality. Thus some of the darker game levels were unplayable, even hooked up through S-Video. This device allows the N64 to have a bright, crisp, clear picture. Don't expect any increased sharpness, a low-resolution game is a low-resolution game. But North American (NTCS) N64 gamers lacking a native SCART hookup will get the most out of their old system with this clever device, a good S-Video-to-Nintendo-sytem cable, and an HDMI cable.

I bought the Composite (Red/White/Yellow RCA plugs) and S-Video to HDMI adapter specifically to use with my SNES that wouldn't otherwise work with my television. I have a 2 year-old Insignia 1080p LCD TV that doesn't have composite inputs on it, but it does have a set of component inputs on the side. As some of you may know, you can actually plug the yellow composite cable into the green input on the video portion of the component inputs and it works fine. Well, for some reason connecting my SNES through this method would not produce in video. I also connected my SNES to my parents 1080 plasma Panasonic HDTV into the TV's composite inputs and the TV wouldn't display an image that way either.

I bought this adapter hoping to alleviate the issue so I don't have to rely on terrible RF adapter quality for my SNES. I've read on the internet that some TV's don't work with older strange resolutions that old consoles put out. There were some other explanations as to why some new TVs don't work with the SNES.

This device so far (just got it today) works great. The image is clear, the visuals aren't great but this is the SNES we're talking about being upconverted to 1080p on a 55 inch TV.

I've read reviews that said this device wouldn't turn on, flat-out didn't work, or stopped working after a couple weeks. Well, I've only had it for a number of hours but so far so good.

I'll update my review after a month or so if there is any change in functionality of the device. But, other than a slight delay in getting the device set up (there is a "switch" button that presumably switches between the composite video/s-video/HDMI (there's an HDMI in along with the other video inputs) and a button that allows you to switch from 720p to 1080p.
