Product Description

Size: Mini Router

The Wireless Multifunction Mini Router features a variety of modes to fill whatever role required in your network; it has enough speed and wireless range to power a complex assortment of devices, enabling you to create a highly efficient mobile office or entertainment network in no time. Small enough to fit in a pocket, with wireless speeds up to 300Mbps and two 10/100Mbps LAN ports, the Mini Router is the perfect choice for high-bandwidth applications like video streaming, VoIP, and online gaming. It supports the following working modes:

repeater
Repeater mode lets you connect to your existing network and amplify it. This enables you to extend the range of your wireless network - invaluable if you have a weak connection in a room far away from your router.

Router
Router mode functions as a typical router, connecting to the internet provided by your ISP and broadcasting a wireless signal, to create your own network.

Access Point
The Mini Router can create a wireless connection from a wired source in Access Point mode. If only an ethernet port or ethernet cable is available, the router can connect to the wired connection and broadcast a wireless network that all your devices can connect to.

Bridge
In Bridge mode, the Mini Router can connect to an existing wireless network and rebroadcast it under a new name; useful for organizing different users of your network into separate connections.

Client
In Client mode, the Mini Router connects to a device such as a Smart TV or video game console using an ethernet cable and then can be used as a wireless adapter, enabling the connected device to connect to the internet wirelessly.

Package includes
1x Etekcity Wireless-N Mini Router
1x RJ45 Ethernet Cable
1x User's Manual

Recently I installed an outdoor wireless security camera. It was just out of range and kept dropping off my network. I was able to easily set this router up to use as a Repeater which extended my wireless range so that I could connect my security camera wirelessly to my network.

In my video review, I show how simple it was to configure. I also like that it has the option to double as a stand-alone router, Access Point, Bridge or WISP. While I'll more than likely keep it as a Repeater, it's nice to know I can take it with me on vacation and use at a hotel or someone's house with weak wireless signals.

It puts off a good signal (much better than I had anticipated). I also plan to use it for "guest" access, using a different password than my main network. This will allow family and friends to connect wireless to the internet without me having to give them my main network password.

So far, I am very pleased with this unit. I haven't noticed any dropped signals or degradation whatsoever. Should I come across any nuisances or other issues, I'll be sure to update this review.

I received a sample to review.

In some parts of the house I had very low wireless signal and very slow speed. My tablet took for ever to update or download even a small app. Sometimes connecting to the web was impossible.
I plugged in the ETEKCITY Wireless-N Mini Router and following the directions in the installation manual, in five minutes I had a very strong wireless signal in all the house. I couldn't believe how easy it was.
I had a network data cable hooked up to my TV, so I went through the ETEKCITY Wireless-N Mini Router back to my television and my NetFlix works faster than ever. Then I set up my laptop and tablet to work off a new wireless network so everyone in the house can get blazing fast wireless. I could have set it up to be a repeater of my other wireless network on my cable router but I chose not to and now I have two wireless networks that rival a wired connection to my cable modem.
It is so simple and easy anyone could set it up, if you can read, and the price can't be beaten by anyone.
I started working with and building computer systems in 1982 for myself, so I have been using them for a long time and I have never found a product that works as easily as the ETEKCITY Wireless-N Mini Router.

Review for ETEKCITY Wirelss-N Mini Router
05-WS-WN523N2-ETEK

Got it working, spent 4 hours testing all 4 modes. Got all of them working but some hiccups needing to use both user interfaces to get things working.

Router has two completely different interfaces.
1. Windows 8 tile-looking looking interface when you first login to router, with annoying tiles flipping around. You have to wait and time when you click on some of the tiles (WAN settings & LAN settings toggle when the tile flips! This interface is the only way you can choose the 4 router modes properly, I think.

2. “Advanced” button at bottom of screen takes you to an older looking interface which lets you configure more options when you are setting it up. In this interface, under “Wireless Basic Settings, Wireless Mode” there are 4 options that don’t match the other interface. I am not sure if these line up with the other modes, but they didn’t always seem to update correctly based on the “tile interface.” I could not get things working from this menu however. I just changed, them, hit “APPLY”, and “REBOOT LATER”, then went back home to the tile menu to change between the tile menu modes.
AP - You have to select this if you want to use “REPEATER” or “ROUTER”. I am not sure if I used this for “AP” or not.
CLIENT - You have to select this for “WIRELESS ISP”. I am not sure if I used this for “AP” or not.
WDS - did not use
AP+WDS did not use

The router’s default address is 192.168.10.253 to access it from a browser.

Here are the 4 router modes from the “tile-flipping GUI”:
ROUTER - It is really unclear from the documentation what the difference is between ROUTER and AP mode, but I will tell you.

I was excited to find a device like this exists and get to try it out. I had a couple of uses in mind for it and I was happy to find out this device fit the bill perfectly.

I had 2 main goals for this product:
1) to extend the wifi signal to the far end of my house.
2) provide wired internet to a computer/xbox I have in a spare room that does not have wifi.

I was surprised to see how easy connecting to this thing was. I was worried I was going to have to connect cables and manually type set an IP address on my laptop, etc like I've had to do on other devices -- but this was not the case. I was happy to see that the setup is all done over wireless. You basically just plug it into a wall outlet, choose the SSID its broadcasting on your computer, punch in the IP address located on the back and log in with the default username and password that's listed. Easy!

The instructions left a little to be desired, but they provided enough to get me connected and logged in, and once in I was able to navigate around the GUI and figure things out. If I was just using this as a AP or router, the instructions would have been fine, but I was going for a little more complex setup which required some tweaking in the advanced page. I did mess up the settings on it a couple times before I got it configured the way I wanted.... fortunately, there is a little paperclip reset button on the side that will take you back to square 1.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, I struggled a little bit at first with the "Easy Wizard setup mode with the windows 8 tiles" (I was trying to set it up as a repeater, but in the wizard mode it wouldn't let me enter a "passphrase"; only a hex key).
