Charles Owens is another young talent that has been a NYC fixture over past decade and with other Smalls cohort Omer Avital on bass,Daniel Friedman on drums,and Jason Lindner on piano.What's nice here as Thom Jurek points out in his AMG review is that this unit has been playing together for 6 years and there sympathy and anticipation shows.Nobody here is re-inventing the wheel in my opinion but we have good musicians with good chops and a set list of originals and standards.But they play is not your fathers Oldsmobile.It's not unique but has what is a boradly styled post bop.Owens himself has a bantam to middleweight tone that flows out of the Hawkins,Rollins,Trane line.But it is the rich interplay that may have you going back to this CD even if nothing is jaw dropping individually or collectively.Tues include:1) No Resolution Owens

A tip of the hat to Spanish Fresh Sounds labels New Talent Series who along with many others from around the jazz world seems to be along with Smalls own label to be capturing an era of young and less recorded older musicians in the NYC downtown scene who might otherwise go unheard.Check out Jazz Foundation Of American now at X-Mass time to give in your or somebody else's name ( agreat gift for true jazzbo) or any time of the year to help those in jazz community in need who have given us so much.
