5.0 out of 5 stars Oh yes
Vio-Lence are never gonna get that much recognition, as they were unabashed followers, but I say it's better to perfect an already existing genre than to innovate a mediocre one. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not Really a Classic Album, but Good Nonetheless
Ok, so claiming that Vio-lence was much better than Machine Head may be an almost foolproof way of feigning metal credibility, but truth be told, while the former was at best a second tier Bay Area thrash latecomer band with a substandard vocalist, the latter rose as one of the leaders in the 90s groove metal movement, leaving a legacy of four good metal albums, despite...

Vio-Lence are never gonna get that much recognition, as they were unabashed followers, but I say it's better to perfect an already existing genre than to innovate a mediocre one. No, Vio-Lence aren't one of the very best thrash bands around, but when it comes to just straight up, unrelenting thrash, they're about as good as it gets. Or, they are at their best. Though the common position is that 'Eternal Nightmare' is their best work, I easily prefer 'Oppressing the Masses'. But this is still a very good, totally worthwhile album. As far as just being totally driving and energetic, 'Eternal Nightmare' is just about the best thing out there, but it's not as catchy as OtM. (Though it's still got some instantly memorable stuff, specifically 'Calling in the Coroner', 'Kill on Command' and 'Serial Killer'.) Lotsa people out there hate Killian, and while he is undeniably about the worst singer ever, from a technical standpoint, I think he totally works with them. He's just so wild and unhinged, that he's a lotta fun. Futhermore, they use gang vox better than any other thrash band.(And, it's not overdone here, production wise, as it is on OtM.) This album isn't much for variety, as it has no ballads and every song is either fast or extremely fast, but this is a method they use better than just about anyone else, and it never seems forced, as it does with many others.

This re-issue comes with a live disc, which is totally great, and a fine reminder as to why thrash is the best metal subgenre around. Excellent performance, fabulous production, and a great set list, and all with out adding any to the price. Even if you have an old copy of this album it's definitely worth getting for the live disc.

It's great that their stuff is finally getting to be in print again. 'Burn My Eyes' my ass, this is when RRRobbbbbb Flynnnnnn really knew how to rock. Get it.

I must admit I was thrilled to get this gem on cd. I belive it has always been difficult to find and most of my enjoyment came by way of tape. This is a fantastic speed metal album with some of the most insane solos ever. To me this is as good as anything. I did favor this over oppressing the masses those being the only two i owned. I understand its tough to find fans of violence but trust me this is one to be proud of having in the cd rack.I highly recommend this album it is very unique and has a very special flow to it. The lead singer has his own style that i think most metal fans will love.

5.0 out of 5 stars 17 Years later....!!!!, June 28, 2005

This is a genre defining album if I have ever heard one. Any fan of late 80's bay area thrash should own this and now you can for much less than the $70-$100 the original pressing would cost you. I have seen so many message boards with people wishing for this re-release and always looked at my copy on the shelf with a smile, but I am happy to see that so many peoples wishes have finally been answered.

I saw Vio-Lence on tour with Testament and again with Voi-Vod. Any one who was into the scene back then already knows enough about this band, but if you are younger and just getting into the older thrash stuff or collecting, this is a solid CD and a must have. Kinda nice that they threw in the bonus stuff which comes from this and their sophomore LP 'Oppressing the Masses'.

Unfortunately I haven't picked the re-release up yet and could not tell you if it has been remastered...as with any of the late 80's stuff (especially for debut's) the production on the original pressing is not the best. But even if it hasn't been remastered it is still recommended to all. I still listen to it 17 years later and will be buying a new copy as mine has been affectionately worn out...and if you like it...check out 'MACHINEHEAD' which showcases both Rob Flynn (guitar and backup vocals for vio-lence and guitar and vocals for machinehead) and Phil Demmel (guitar for violence and guitar for machinehead).

THRASH OUT...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome thrash classic from the late 80's. Recommended!, December 26, 2003

Vio-lence was one of the better bands to come out of the bay area during the thrash boom of the mid to late 1980's. This is the debut album for the band, and undoubtedly the best one they released. Contains the killer title track "Eternal Nightmare", "Calling in the Coroner", and "Bodies on Bodies" among others.
Vio-lence has been given some unfair reviews due to the unique singing style of Sean Killian. I happen to love the way he sings on this album, as it not only fits the music perfectly, but gave the band a very distinctive sound which separated them from the other hundreds of thrash bands that existed at the time. I had a harder time getting used to Dave Mustaine of Megadeth than I did with Killian. Besides, if the singing is very important to you, then why are you listening to thrash?
Anyway, I recommend this album to any fan of (early)Metallica, (early)Megadeth, (early)Anthrax (Jeez, what happened to these once great bands?!), Forbidden, Heathen, Defiance, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel, or any other 80's thrash band.

Vio-lence's "Eternal Nightmare" album is one of the top thrash metal albums of all time. Notice I said album. I owned this on vinyl and cassette the first time around and have been waiting for years for a CD to be reissued. Furious drums, intense lyrics, insane guitar work...this CD is the best of the best. And to top it off it comes with a killer live CD as a bonus!!! Sweet!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Paid $50 For The Original Pressing... Twice!, May 13, 2007

I also purchased the re-release. The good thing about having two original copies, is that when I went to go see them live, I got them to sign all three of their CD covers (Eternal Nightmare, Oppressing The Masses, and Nothing To Gain).

This is a thrashterpiece. This is, hands down, one of the best thrash albums of all time. Crushing riffs, brutal lyrics, and all the aggression you can handle. I break out this CD more than I do any other thrash metal album. I cannot get tired of it. I used to own it on tape, and wore the tape out. That's how good this album is.

It's just too bad that they called it quits... again. These songs are way too sick to let them lie dormant like they are now. I wish someone would start a tribute band, with a vocalist that sounds exactly like Sean Killian, and keep these songs alive. That's how good these songs are.

If you do not own this album, you are not a true thrash metal fan.

Off the top of my head, I would have to say YES! Songs are all fast all Thrash and no ballads that would take most other LP's out of the running from this era. They perfected the Thrash sound. I have waited for over a decade to own this on CD and now I do. This band should have been HUGE, at least as popular as other bay area bands. If you like Metal, GET THIS CD!

4.0 out of 5 stars Top-notch 80's hardcore thrash, August 14, 2006

Even though most kids know this band from having that dude from Machine Head in it, this is a very good but not earth-shattering Double CD. Lotsa shout choruses and breakdowns, but the energy is there and these guys had what it took to become a presence on the national metal scene. Ugly and hard as hell and worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is f*cking insane!, March 24, 2006
This review is from: Eternal Nightmare (Audio CD)
I am not kidding, this is some seriously killer speed metal. These songs are brutal and crushing, the guitar team of Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel is outstanding. A lot of people hate the singer Sean Killian and I guess I can understand why. He doesn't always sing on key, but personnally, I love his singing style. He seems to shout the words in such a random fashion that it makes the album seem even more untamed and wild. If you think Metallica is heavy, then prepare yourself, Eternal Nightmare is a psychotic and unpolished slice of speed metal.

The album starts with Eternal Nightmare. It has a nice crushing intro, and about a minute into the song, Sean starts his singing. You will definitely know by then that this song was meant to kick some ass! About halfway through, we get a killer guitar solo which is followed by a bass solo. And then the song kicks back into gear. Serial Killer is a raw piece of speed, Sean sings so damn fast! How the heck does he keep his breath? The guitar solos on this one are super fast. Calling in the Coroner is another brutal song. The tone in Sean's voice on this one is just magnificent, he sounds so pissed. I love the gang vocals at the end that go "CORONER CORONER!" A furious guitar solo ends the song. T.D.S. is a nice, fast number with more awesome gang vocals. Get your neck ready for this one, I would be surprised if you could get through this one without snapping your neck.

Bodies on Bodies is pure metal-mania with some of the best lyrics. "KILLING-HE JUST KEEPS KILLING" You know you love that! And the solos on this song! My God, how do they do that? "BODIES ON BODIES ON BODIES" I tell you, the gang vocals make this album ten times better. Phobophobia is a six minute crusher with a BRILLIANT solo about halfway through. I know, I know, I keep ranting about the solos, but dammit check these songs out and you will agree! The album ends with the speedy Kill on Command. Nice blazing leads and some of my favorite lyrics "With my crosshatch on his chest/ You could probably guess the rest/When you see his lifeless body hit the f*cking street" The shouts of "KILL! ON COMMAND!" are very punkish.

Well, I may have talked a lot about the lyrics and guitar solos, but I don't care because this is one killer piece of heavy music. If you like your music intense and fast, then you NEED Eternal Nightmare. It's a shame that not more metalheads know of this band, they really are missing out. Do not cheat yourself any longer! Buy this album and you will thank me later!
