Book Description

February 16, 2010
Cobb, a devoted teacher and nature-lover, takes a sabbatical from his New England boys prep school seeking to experience what Henry David Thoreau and the transcendentalists did in the early nineteenth century. Kayaking to the last known spot where the American writer and philosopher camped four years before he died, he encounters the beautiful free-spirited Mary. Also a teacher, avid bird-watcher, and deft adventurist, Mary is flirtatious and beguiling, and the two soon become inseparable. Mary is like no one Cobb has ever met before, but he gets the feeling that she is harboring a secret. Eventually she shares her fears with Cobb—that she may be carrying the gene for a devastating, incurable illness that runs in her family. Finding strength in their commitment to one another, the two embark on a journey that is filled with joy, anguish, hope, and most importantly, unending love.

Set against the sweeping natural backdrops of Maine’s rugged backcountry, the exotic islands of Indonesia, scenic Yellowstone National Park, and rural New England, Tender River is a timeless and poignant love story that will captivate readers everywhere.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Henry David Thoreau meets Nicholas Sparks in this poignant love story rooted in the forests of Maine. On sabbatical, prep school teacher Jonathan Cobb's only goal is to retrace Thoreau's historic 92-mile journey along the Allagash Waterway by kayak, little realizing that, like Thoreau, he will soon "front only the essential facts of life" after meeting Mary Fury on his first night camping. An experienced, exuberant outdoorswoman, Mary invites Cobb to join her for a lecture at the Chungamunga camp for girls suffering with medical illnesses. There, Cobb is impressed by the camaraderie of the group, drawn in by their emphasis on creativity, mythology and survival skills. His growing feelings for Mary are put to the test when she reveals that she's suffering from Huntington's disease, and details the condition's debilitating path. Though the plot sometimes drags through Monninger's numerous digressions, his keen eye for nature, subtle incorporation of indigenous myths and use of symbolism make for a memorable story of love and courage. From Booklist

Love conquers all, the saying goes, but it can’t win out over the disease that befalls Mary Fury, the seemingly unflappable heroine at the center of Monninger’s poignant, if a bit overlong, novel. Fury has the gene for Huntington’s, a cruel affliction that attacks the body slowly, reducing a once healthy person to a mass of twitching muscles and nerves. Jonathan Cobb, a University of New Hampshire professor on sabbatical, learns the grim reality of Mary’s situation shortly after the two meet (and instantly fall in love) on the Allagash River. This is the land of Thoreau’s Walden Pond, and Cobb had come there to experience firsthand the pleasures of a simple life illustrated by its celebrated author. When Mary begins showing signs of Huntington’s, the two must cope with the inevitable, which includes honoring Mary’s wishes to live out her days as she sees fit. Monninger (Baby, 2007) is a gifted writer, and readers able to overlook a few maudlin moments will relish this eloquently rendered tale. --Allison Block

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, June 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Eternal on the Water (Paperback)
Eternal on the Water is one of those books that should be a slam-dunk. Good story, compelling themes, interesting context (especially all the crow lore), great title, talented writer. Why, then, was I never completely enthralled and often downright annoyed?

First the good--Monninger writes lovely prose, especially his descriptions of the natural world. You can see it, hear it, feel it, smell it. His approach to structure is another matter. The whole Indonesian section seemed like it belonged in a different book. But perhaps the most irritating thing about the book is that every single character is "exceptional." Everyone from the two main characters down to the Yellowstone Park Ranger is attractive, brilliant, wise, patient, kind, loving, generous...not to mention politically correct. The dialog was unrelentingly witty.

Couldn't just one person have been average? Or flawed? Nobody got pissed off, nobody was impatient or moody or selfish. Just once I wanted Jonathan and Mary to disagree about what to eat or what movie to see or where to put the window. I know there are probably people like Mary (who in Joan's words is "too good for this world") but Heaven deliver me from a whole novel full of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking story about love and loss, February 19, 2010
By
Leslie (Midwestern USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Eternal on the Water (Paperback)
Eternal On The Water is a thought-provoking story about love and loss and difficult decisions. It is the story of Cobb and Mary, two people who never expected to meet and fall in love while on a camping trip in Maine. As they get to know more about each other it soon becomes evident that Mary has something she must tell him, that she may carry the gene for a fatal genetic disease, which will impact their future life together.

The novel opens with Mary's death and Cobb proceeds to tell us their story. Knowing the ending changed the way I viewed the characters. There was no longer any suspense as to whether they would end up together. Although they kept referring to each other as soul mates, I never really felt the passion that would be expected. There was no big build-up to romance. They were likable characters and I could sense their deep commitment to each other, but the romance was lacking.

I enjoyed the novel's backdrop of the wilderness and nature. The folklore and stories about the animals: crows, bears, wolves and turtles to name a few, added interest. Mary's life is in the outdoors, the connection is deep and we can appreciate that through her stories.

I received this novel as part of the Barnes and Nobel First Look Book Club. For the most part I found it enjoyable even though it is not the type of book I would usually be drawn to. The story got a little slow at times but it picked up the pace again towards the end and it was worth staying with the book. There are some important messages and discussion points in this book about life and death and doing both on your own terms. This would make an excellent choice for a book club read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An emotional love story perfect for a rainy day....., February 16, 2010
This review is from: Eternal on the Water (Paperback)
I loved this book. It is a raw, emotional love story. As it is described, it is about a couple who meet and fall in love on a river. But the characters face an unexpected turn...and that is where the emotion comes in and their love being eternally on the water. I won't be giving a long, heart-felt review of this book, as I will start the emotional process all over again, or I may give away spoilers, so I will keep this short and sweet. Read it. It is a Nicholas Sparks-style of writing, and it tugs at your heart. I was pulled into the story from the mysterious events at the beginning and wasn't let go until I read the very last page. I need tissues with this book....lots and lots of tissues. I am sure will need them too! This is, most definitely, a 5 star book and I will recommend this book to all who ask for a wonderfully written, heart- felt, love story. I was extremely pleased with reading this book.
