Great Singing!!!,
By Louis Greto (Tampa, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eternally [ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED] 2CD SET (Audio CD)
Vic Damone is one of a great ecstatic fountain of Italian-American singers who flourished in the 1940's to the early sixties. The beauty of his voice is stunning. Just listen to him sing "I Have But One Heart". The sound is like spun sugar. And it is a perfect example of the art of popular singing of that time which is always conversational in tone. The classic american pop song is like a delicate balloon, too much air and it pops. He sang in tune and he had excellent vocal placement which also helps.
Occasionally he slightly oversings due to youthful exuberance. The sheer joy of singing can get away from one at times. He could have easily sung opera. I had met him in the middle eighties. He was one of the nicest and humblest men I had ever met. I heard him singing his scales backstage before he went on. And his voice was even larger then. He could easily have sung without a microphone. If you're tired of hearing people who claim they are singers and who make horrible albums of popular standards, get this album and listen to Damone. He will make you believe again in the beauty of the human voice and the greatness of the American Popular Song. Not every song on the cd is great, but Damone sings each one with great sincerity and truth.
