3.0 out of 5 stars They got better
O.k. I got this one because I enjoyed "The Circle of Life" album a lot. I was a little disappointed by this earlier one. Not bad, but compared to "The Circle of Life", not great.

Freedom Call. The name brings a smile to the faces of those who love the band as well as spite and distate by those who don't. In case you don't know, Freedom Call is a band that prides itself on making the happiest, most feel-good music you'll ever hear.

Well, they succeed.

This music is happy. It incorporates huge, sing-along choruses, ultra-melodic riffs, lots of keyboards, and vocals that soar like eagles and turns this 'Eternity' into one big smile after another. Happy is an understatement as far as this album goes, and this will undoubtedly turn some people off, but the ones who are looking for the happiest of the happiest Power Metal will love this as much as I do. The happiness is an overpowering sense of euphoria that no album I've heard has ever duplicated, and it's oddly refreshing.

The technical proficiency of the band is best described as very compitent. While the solos aren't the best you'll ever hear, they do very well in pulling them off. Where the band excells most in, however, is the songwriting. Each song varies from the last and in such a way that you are somewhat sorry that the song is over, but can't wait to get to the next song of high spirits and infectious choruses.

There are absolutely no complaints about the production. Everything as as it should be: crystal clear and bright as the sun. From the bright keyboards used in abundance with cheesiness galore to the perfectly thick guitars and bright and happy vocals.

The one thing that strikes me most about this album is the atmosphere. No matter how sad or depressed or angry I am, this album will always be there to lend me smiles. So is this album cheesy? Yes. Is it generic? Maybe, but these elements just add to its charm. Smiles!

5.0 out of 5 stars Posi metal!, July 17, 2003

Feeling down? Life got you in the dumps? Sad about a recent turn of events in your life? Angry at the world, your job, people around you? Wish you could find some way to cheer up and feel happy and hopeful once again? The answer: ETERNITY! Nothing will put a smile instantly on your face like this album. From start to finish (excepting the rather sad, but still awesome, closer) this is positive, upbeat, energetic metal. In fact, this could be the happiest metal band in the history of the style!

The mix is good; the production is top notch. The music really calls to mind the images on the cover and booklet, although there does not appear to be a theme or concept to the album. The guitarists, while obviously musically adept, eschew mindless scale-shredding in favor of hummable, memorable, melodic lines that add to the music infinitely.

Listening to this, the one impression that comes through loud and clear is that this is feel-good music. It never fails to pull my spirit up into the clouds, no matter how low I may be. Better than most therapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bloody good, July 7, 2003
This review is from: Eternity (Audio CD)
Freedom Call is what you call fantasy power metal, so you are sure to get cheesy lyrics about heroes and dragons etc. But if that doesn't bother you (and I love it) you will really enjoy this album. This is one of Freedom Call's best albums, the first track, Metal Invasion, is a long one at around 7 min and has an excellent opera style opening. The entire album is very fast power metal with the exception of two ballads: Bleeding Heart and Flame in the Night. Even though these two are slower, they still pack a punch and make me want to shed a tear.

The only bad part about this album are the photos of the band inside the cd case. Particularly the one where the whole band is smiling at the camera... it's creepy.

5.0 out of 5 stars you can listen to this album forever., April 20, 2006
This review is from: Eternity (Audio CD)
Freedom Call put out a great album in 2002. you can start with any other of their albums, but this album is great. it is for fans of HammerFall, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Saxon, and Blind Gaurdian. however, even if the above bands are not in your collection, you will probably enjoy this one. keyboards add a nice touch. get this album if you are a metalhead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heed To The Call!, February 23, 2003
By A Customer

Freedom Call has quickly become one of my favorite power metal bands! They offer huge vocals, a variety of time changes, positive lyrics, and a total, overall bombastic sound! I have been reading reviews on these guys from a number of power metal listeners, so I bought their Eternity cd on blind faith, and I was not disappointed! Let's just say, I have recently puchased their second effort, Crystal Empire, so it should be arriving any day now! I highly recommend Freedom Call to any fan of Edguy, Rhapsody, Blind Guardian and Savatage believe it or not! Buy it, turn it up, and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun from start to finish, July 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Eternity (Audio CD)
I am a power and progressive metal fan. I recently discovered this AWESOME band. This is my first Cd I have purchased by Freedom Call, actually got it here on Amazon after listening to some samples and songs on youtube and Grooveshark. This CD is awesome start to finish. Its just a fun listen. Alot of speedy songs but also good mid tempo songs as well. I don't like speed songs for speed sake. But these guys are so melodic and catchy there sound is addicting. I think there are many classics here. If you like this kind of music get the CD. Its better with every listen!

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Freedom Call's strongest album, March 19, 2010
This review is from: Eternity (Audio CD)
2002's Eternity is the third album from German melodic power metal band Freedom Call. The band, formed by former Gamma Ray drummer Dan Zimmermann, takes the basic Helloween power metal formula, doubles down on melody and adds lots of keyboards. Whether this shiny, happy, sing-along style is truly "metal" is debatable, but it's still pretty infectious.

Eternity picks up right where 2001's Crystal Empire left off. I'd almost believe these were leftover songs from the Crystal Empire sessions except that they're too good to be anything other than "a-list" material. The style hasn't changed at all - it's still wall-to-wall galloping leads, sing-along harmonized choruses, prominent keyboards and loads of melody - but the songwriting and musicianship seem to have taken a step forward. I'd say the vocals have too, but Chris Bay's voice has always been this band's main attraction. If I were putting a "best of" Freedom Call album together, I'd include nearly every song on Eternity.

Freedom Call is undoubtedly going to be too upbeat and cheesy for some metal fans, but they should appeal to fans of the German power metal sound as well as bands like Lost Horizon, Hammerfall and even Dragonforce. Stairway to Fairyland is probably the best place to start if you're unfamiliar with the band, but Eternity is probably the better album overall.

Oh, and did I hear a death metal growl or two on "Ages of Power?" How un-Freedom Call.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Metal?, October 15, 2007

Fred Rayworth (Las Vegas, NV United States) - See all my reviews

I picked this up in a random moment because it was in the metal section of the CD store and had a cool cover. It could have been a hundred different styles and luckily it isn't one I hate.

When I first listened to it, it was thinking, "Oh no, not another Christian album." However, after a few tracks, I realized it is not that at all. This is positive metal, an almost unheard of concept lately.

The musicianship is top notch and the production is practically flawless. I really could care less about the production but when I do happen to pay attention, I notice things that many times add charm to the recording. In this case, I noticed nothing a miss and the music had my full attention.

Really good power metal and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing..., May 31, 2007
This review is from: Eternity (Audio CD)
After the release of Fairyland, I honestly didn't think that this group could get any better. They follow through in almost every facet of the words Power Metal.

Nothing has changed with the band, except with age, they get better. Eternity, I feel, is even better than Fairyland which is rated their top album. Some bands write songs; Freedom Call write masterpieces. An example of this is demonstrated in the song: Warriors. It's an amazing masterpiece with one of the most catchy choruses ever! You cannot help but sing it, no matter how hard you try.

Overall this album succeeds where others have failed. This album is definately a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Happiest Power Metal Ever, August 27, 2002
This review is from: Eternity (Audio CD)
These guys are great I've been following them since the first album came out, and they have gotten better ever cd, Chis' Voice is like a angel, and there is no way you can be depressed listing to these guys they just make happy music the kind you cant get out of your head cause its simple and Cetchy.
These guys have been helping Blind Guardian on thier tour as a opening act for Blind Guardian, And Blind Guardian Is my favorite band ever but thats not the point, the point is that BG are very picky on who they let tour with them, so by letting them tour with BG its like Blind Guardian also giving you the same advice Im giving you. BUY BUY BUY.
