Book Description

June 2004
Alexis Locke gave the first forty-five years of her life to an agency that never gave a second thought to putting her in harm's way. After fifteen years of voluntarily retirement and seclusion, she is forced to investigate the seemingly accidental deaths of five unrelated scientists, one of whom turns out to be the son she had to give up at birth. Following the clues that lead her from the mega-biotech companies in Kasakhstan to the orbiting O'Neill Colonies, Alexis quickly learns that she is being set up, that her death is wanted by many and that the deaths she's investigating have a far bigger connection that anyone ever thought possible, eventually forcing her to question her own existence and purpose. And with that questioning, Alexis soon sees that there is a plan as work handed down from the future from which she can not escape.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is the first book published by R. Peter Ubtrent. He is currently working on his next book, Dark Pilgrim Rising, the first in a six book series.

From the Inside Flap

The year is 2085. The world's oil supply is gone. Hydrogen fueled hover cars rule the skies and mega-biotech companies rule the land. Thriving O'Neill Colonies orbit the Earth at the Lagrangian points, supporting fully habitable worlds that are becoming more and more attractive to those living on an over-crowded planet. Every part of the human body can be replaced when broken.... except for the brain. There are those who want to change that. This is the world in which Alexis Locke finds herself, investigating the death of five unrelated scientists and stumbling onto a plan that was evolved many eons in the future. And the future doesn't want her to change anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!!, August 1, 2004
This review is from: Eternity's Handmaiden (Paperback)
The author did an excellent job on the difficult task of portraying time travel. I found
Eternity's Handmaiden constantly leaving me wanting to read more. There were times
when I wanted to go to bed but I simply could not put the book down. I'm looking
forward to Ubtrent's next book whenever it may be published. Basically, Eternity's
Handmaiden is a must read book for science fiction fans and, pretty much, anyone who
enjoys a lot of excitement. Check it out for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eternity's Handmaiden Review, May 26, 2005
By
Jessica Flippen (West Coast, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Eternity's Handmaiden (Paperback)
The concepts of this novel are thought-provoking, causing the reader to question the morality of man's advancements, and humanity's very existence. A gifted artist, Ubtrent paints a picture of words. His descriptions of untouched landscapes are without flaw. And just as unconquerable as the book's rugged terrain is the dominative nature of Alexis herself. Schematically brilliant, it leads the reader through a journey of purpose and builds to an insurmountable conclusion. Twisting our conception of cyclical time, it ends where the story begins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced futuristic adventure, August 3, 2004
This review is from: Eternity's Handmaiden (Paperback)
Set in a future that is not that far away, in either concept or time, this adventure/mystery takes you on a ride whose ending is just one of the many plot twists you'll experience. Build around a strong lead character and set in a series of worlds one hopes never become reality, Eternity's Handmaiden will leave you wondering whether the technology we so fervently seek is truly to our mutual benefit. Excellent read. I'd recommend it to everyone.
