"...a lot is packed into ETHAN and if you're a big softy like me make sure you have some tissues handy. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down and balled like a big ol' baby over one particularly emotionally gripping scene..." ~ Rhi Reading

"...Ethan is a fantastic edition to the BRIGHTEST KIND OF DARKNESS series, and can be read before you start the series, or at any point during it. Don't miss this look into Ethan's mind and heart..." ~ Love is Not a Triangle

When I first heard that PT Michelle was coming out with a novella just about Ethan, I was intrigued. It's not very often you are allowed inside another character's head in a series, and I jumped at the chance to see what life looked like through Ethan's eyes. I appreciated hearing his voice, and being able to understand a bit more about where his "old soul" came from, and to watch his relationship with Nara begin to evolve even before she was really aware of him.
The book doesn't go into a lot of detail about his dreams or his secrets, which some fans of the series may find bothersome, but this is a Prequel - it's not intended to explain what those of us already know about him, it's intended to give some backstory, and yet not give too much away for those who have not yet read the rest of the series. (Besides, if it was all about the evolution of his secrets, it would read too much like BKoD, I feel.) ETHAN left this reader wanting more, and, really, isn't that the best way to leave a book? This is a great read for anyone who is just beginning the BKoD series, or for those who already love it! (Fair warning: make sure you have tissues nearby!) Now that I am all caught up on this series, I'll be waiting with impatient foot-tapping for DESTINY to debut!

I was given a free copy of ETHAN from the author in exchange for an honest review of it. :)

Let me just start out by saying BKoD is one of my favorite YA reads! Having read both Brightest Kind of Darkness (BKoD #1) and Lucid (BKoD #2), this novella was a perfect addition.

While I believe this novella should definitely be read after reading Brightest Kind of Darkness (BKoD #1) Or even Lucid (BKoD #2), I feel that if someone were to read it before any of the other books that it doesn't give too much away to ruin the others.

This novella revolves around Ethan Harris, our leading guy in this fascinating series. He is quite elusive and mysterious in the first book and you can't help but want to know more about his character. The beginning of ETHAN takes place the weeks prior to the initial bomb threat at Blue Ridge Highschool, which is the set up for book one, Brightest Kind of Darkness.

In ETHAN, we get to delve a little deeper into this curiously intriguing character and learn many things about him that help explain just who he is. From the guys he associated with at Central, the school which he is transferring from, to understanding more of the family dynamic (or lack thereof really ) with his parents. His strong bond with his brother is also highlighted a little more, giving us a more of a backstory with the relationship between the two and how much of an important, almost parental persona his brother takes on at times.

We also come to see the first time Ethan notices Nara and how her presences affects him and calms/quiets some of the dark issues that surround our leading guy. While our oblivious Nara is going about her (mostly) normal days, Ethan is plagued with startling thoughts and feelings and images that only Nara unknowingly soothes.

First I wish to thank the author P.T. Michelle for providing me a copy to read for an honest review. I fell in love with the series when I first read Brightest Kind of Darkness in September 2012. Ethan is a prequel to that book, but I would suggest reading it after BKOD.

This prequel gives you a bit more info on Ethan and how he came to meet Nora. But a lot of the info you get from the BKOD book itself. It seemed to repeat a lot of the same issues/ideas, but was a good refresher for me. It just seems to tense up the reading, not letting it just flow. The author loses some of her direction with the upper level vocabulary used. For some bits it turned me off a little, and if she had used the word viscerally, or any of its forms, one more time I would have screamed.

The scene with Ethan and Buddy was touching. The tears were streaming down my cheeks. The author captured the feelings perfectly. This reminded me of why I loved BKOD so much. P.T. Michelle, when she just lets it roll, can put you right into the book and you feel what the characters are feeling.

If you are a new reader, I highly suggest reading Brightest Kind of Darkeness first, than this one, than onto Lucid (Brightest Kind of Darkness, Book 2) (Volume 2). For those that have read BKOD but haven't gone further in the series, this will bring back things you may have forgotten and set you up to continue on. Also, for those that have read along with the series, stay tuned for Destiny scheduled for release on March 31, 2013!

This series was one of my favorites from last year, so when I heard that P.T. was going to do a novella for Ethan, I was very excited, especially since this character seems to be so much different in book one then in book two. And he even though we get to know him, he is still a complete mystery, especially in book two.

When you read different book series, you usually only get to know one person really well, even if the other main character plays a big part, you seem to only get one back story. We got to know Nara a lot of Brightest Kind of Darkness, and of course we meet Ethan, but there is a lot of mystery to him and then with Lucid, he seems to be a completely different guy, at least to me. He almost didn't feel the same to me.

This book really made me understand and feel for Ethan. You learn about his troubles in BKoD, but this is so much more in depth and I just fell in love with him so much more. I felt really bad for him, and wanted to just give him a big hug. But by reading this little novella about Ethan, it really made Lucid make a ton of more sense for me. I can see how his personality can change, and the 180 he seems to do in Lucid from BKoD, and his temper, all makes sense to me now, and I am very excited for the next book! It you have read this series, this is a must read!!!
