4.0 out of 5 stars favorite feeder
I received this feeder yesterday, so problems may arise in the future, however I am very pleased with it so far. I already own a couple other feeders and this feeder seems to be at least as well made as the best of my others. I don't have any problems with the lid not fitting properly as another reviewer complained about.

I let it charge yesterday and last...

3.0 out of 5 stars all birds love this one
You really have to watch the level of food if it gets to low the sparrows will get their head stuck in the holes. The lights are really not that bright either but all in all it was an ok substitution for what I really wanted

2.0 out of 5 stars Very pretty, but not built to last., November 18, 2010

We bought this solar feeder less than 3 months ago. It's very nice looking; I liked the finish and the solar lights that come on at night. The birds seem to like it okay, although it's the least visited of our 4 feeders. We put a squirrel baffle over it to help protect it from the elements; squirrels haven't actually been too interested in this one so that hasn't been a big concern.

I don't have a problem with the metal cord and the lid on this one, like another reviewer stated. The lid goes up and down on the chain a little goofy when adding seed, but the top does close. Sometimes I have to hold onto the top part of the chain to help straighten it to get the top down.

If you're having issues with the solar lights being too dim or not turning on, replace the battery in the top with a better rechargeable battery. (Don't forget to recycle the old battery!) The one that came with the feeder was a 600 or 900 mAH, if I recall. Most typical rechargeable batteries you will pick up now will be 1800 mAH or higher. With the higher mAH the light is brighter and stays on longer. It doesn't last very long though, even with the better battery. Honestly, it's really pointless here in WI because I've yet to see one bird flying around in the dark looking for bird seed!

Here ARE the problems we're having with ours, again, after less than 3 months of use:
1. the color has already faded a lot, although I haven't seen any finish actually coming off
2. the 4 little perches keep coming loose. I check them once a week and almost every time at least one is unstable, making it unlikely a bird will perch there
3. the inside bottom of the feeder is at least 60% rusted and wearing through. The metal base is VERY thin. When I clean it out, I can see light coming through the bottom because of the holes through it (there were no holes in the bottom when we got it!) Not too good considering it's filled with very small seed. As I mentioned it's protected from the elements, and I empty/clean/dry/refill after any significant amount of rain. It obviously got wet at some point, but really? Shouldn't bird feeders be at least somewhat resistant to precipitation issues?

I expect this is going to last another few months before I have to dispose of it. It's unfortunate such an attractive little feeder could be made so poorly. This feeder was a waste of money, and I don't recommend buying it.

THIS IS A NICE LOOKING PIECE THAT WILL LOOK GOOD FOR A SHORT WHILE. THE COPPER FINISH IS PROBABLY PAINTED ON. AFTER A YEAR IN THE ELEMENTS THE SOLAR STILL WORKS BUT THE FINISH IS GONE AND THE FEEDER LOOKS VERY ANTIQUE.

I let it charge yesterday and last night the solar powered lights lasted for hours. The lights really make the feeder special and are the perfect luminosity; the lights are bright enough to be useful, but not so bright that the light is intrusive.

I'm still waiting for the birds to "discover" the feeder. We have a lot of squirrels, but the feeder is still full after one tried to get at it. So far, so good!

The bird feeder is easy to use, the top slides up allowing you to fill the feeder easily and is a nice design, plus lighting up at night is a great feature!

The product looks wonderful day and night. I would have liked a bigger bird feeder (it looks bigger in the picture}.
We have a plastic bird feeder that the birds seemed to like better. I don't know if the metal heats up or why, but it is a nice decorative piece for the yard.

To fill the feeder, you slide the lid up along the chain. To close the lid, you slide the lid back down the chain. The chain is as big as the hole in the lid, so the lid gets stuck on the chain and can NEVER be closed again.

Maybe you'll get lucky and receive one that actually functions, because it's MADE IN CHINA, so the tolerances probably vary. The seller processed a fast, friendly and efficient return.
