Grade 7 Up-- Many theatrically aware teens will recognize this surname and may try the book for a report. It is an objective account, free of fictionalizing, relying on firsthand quotations from the subject's autobiography as well as those from her family. There is an abundance of large black-and-white photographs of Barrymore and others, both on- and offstage; a concise chronology; a selective bibliography; and a detailed index. Although Barrymore's brothers were as famous as she, and John's life was more dramatic, Thorleifson avoids telling their stories except where they coincide with their sister's. As a role model, Barrymore provides a strong--although far from flawless--personal as well as professional standard; she was born to and lived among unconventional people at an exciting time. Her story is told in a straightforward, dependable manner. While the telling lacks verve, the tale is not boring and the terse, nonliterary style makes the information easily accessible. --Sally T.
