4.0 out of 5 stars An Average Band?, March 3, 2003
By
This review is from: Ether Song (Audio CD)
Turin Brakes are back again with another superb album. Like The Optimist LP, Ether Song is full of soaring choruses and fantastic harmonies that will make you laugh and cry with every single listen. Full of Stars, Average Man, Clear Blue Air and Stone Thrown are perfect examples of these. The first two singles, Panic Attack and Long Distance have already been very well received by media and fans alike and the album will defnitely please the lovers of its predecessor, The Optimist LP. Long Distance and Panic Attack are definite equals with the first two singles they released from The Optimist LP, Underdog (Save Me) and Mind Over Money. It's been a two year wait, but it'd obvious Gale Paridjanian and Olly Knights have added more to their armoury since their last album's release. Little Brother and Panic Attack give the album a slightly darker attitude that some thought The Optimist LP lacked. Influenced by Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, but with a 'rockier' approach. The newer Turin Brakes, however, don't neglect what they are best at, writing spectacular, acoustic-inspired songs. It seems that Turin Brakes are destined for a Mercury Music Nomination in 2003 by maintaining, if not bettering, the standard set by their debut album. Ether Song has been out for a day and already I can't wait for it's successor. Turin Brakes have definitely grown into a band that know they don't have to take on the world to be successful.
