Kathleen Lagana' is the women's health lecturer and Clinical Instructor in Maternity Nursing at the University of San Francisco. She is a consulting editor for NURSEWEEK and serves as an expert witness in medical malpractice cases. She frequently guest lectures on the complications of pregnancy, perinatal ethics in continuing education courses, and low birthweight prevention. She is a contributor in May & Mahlmeister (1994) Maternal and Neonatal Nursing. Ms. Lagana' is also a per diem staff nurse and member of the maternal transport team at the California Pacific Medical Center. As a PhD candidate at the University of California, San Francisco, she is doing field research on the pregnancy experience in Mexican-American women.

Karen Duderstadt is presently Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Health Care Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco. She teaches in the Pediatric Primary Care/Chronic Care Nurse Practitioner Program and supervises students in a variety of clinical settings. In addition to her clinical preceptor responsibility in neonatal/pediatric nursing at UCSF, she lectures on ethics to graduate students in the perinatal specialty. She is also Director of Valencia Pediatric Practice in San Francisco, a Nurse Run/Nurse Provider Practice in the Mission District providing comprehensive care to an underserved multicultural population. She currently has staff privileges at St. Luke's Hospital's Newborn Nursery.
