Book Description

April 28, 2006 0495093432 978-0495093435 5
This text is designed to introduce students to ethical decision-making in the criminal justice system. Its greatest strengths are its balanced coverage of 1) all three segments of the CJ system-police, courts, and corrections-and 2) both philosophical principles/theories and hands-on criminal justice issues and applications.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The strengths in this book include the current issues associated with correctional professionals. The topics are on target, particularly in the areas within corrections and the community. I particularly appreciate the review of basic philosophy and where some of the values and morals were developed; however, you did not make this a philosophical class, but one of practicality."

"Pollock does a good job of making most of the topics clear. This is a great text for introductory courses in ethics. The overall structure and focus of the text is very good for this size and type."

"I selected the Pollock text because I felt that it provides excellent coverage of ethics for each of the components of the criminal justice system--the police, courts, and corrections--covers ethical perspectives very well, and raises important ethical issues in criminal justice. Pollock also does a careful job updating each new edition. The major reason for choosing this book is its coverage of the material." 4.0 out of 5 stars Good Intro Ethics book for CJ, January 25, 2010
I've used this book for the last couple years, and in fact I am one of the listed reviewers the publisher used for the last edition. I think the author does a decent job of presenting the material overall. Thbe book has a very pro-CJ approach, which makes it a good choice for students. There are other books on the market that take a more "preachy" approach to ethics, and you can tell the authors often think that CJ professionals are beneath them. That's why I like this book, the author is clearly writing for a profession she has respect for and it shows.

This has some good "real world" application and provides clear explanations. The best material is that a student can not only understand but also apply at later times.

I supplement the book with more theory at points, so I guess my only recommendation would be to strengthen that area. That would make the book longer, though, and would probably price it much differently. For what it is, this is a good introductory book for ethics in CJ. The text can spark a reader's interest in the topic or serve as a good foundation for future professionals.
