Editorial Reviews

Review

"A significant contribution by two of the most respected and thoughtful scholars in the field of educational ethics. Shapiro and Stefkovich provide the most coherent narrative to date on the significance of ethics for school leaders. No one does a better job of taking readers to the street level to teach the types of ethical issues which they will confront on the job."--Joseph F. Murphy, Frank W. Mayborn Chair of Education and Associate Dean at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University

"The first edition of this reader-friendly, accessible text quickly became a classic and a widely-used resource for faculty and students. This edition builds on the strengths of the original and will continue to be an important resource for the field."--Gail Furman, Professor, Department of Educational Leadership, Washington State University

Joan Poliner Shapiro recipient of Temple University's 2011 Great Teacher Award

Quick thoughts:

The section describing the different ethics (justice, critique, care) could've been organized a bit better. Also, the model on the cover (professional ethic), has too much going on and is an overly complex description.

The real-world examples are great ways to get you really thinking about different ethical dilemmas.

I thought this was a very good book in the area of ethical leadership in education. It even touches on education law. I recommend it for any administrator's book collection.

The book provides a nice summary of varying ethical perspectives followed by various cases that cause you to reflect and evaluate how to handle these common scenarios ethically. It is a good instructional tool for preparing to deal with ethical issues as a school leader.

Describes a variety of case studies that help give better understanding to ethical decision making in education. Cases range from student rights to teacher privacy, and everything in between. May be best for an introductory course, as it doesn't dig deep into the issues, but rather gives a good overview.

I chose this rating based on the fact that this book was a required text for a class I am taking.
The book "Taking Sides" was also used.
The format works well.
The visual of the actual model presented is helpful.
