Book Description

0805851186 978-0805851182 May 24, 2005
Behavior analysis, a rapidly growing profession, began with the use and application of conditioning and learning techniques to modify the behavior of children or adults presenting severe management problems, often because of developmental disabilities. Now behavior analysts work in a variety of settings, from clinics and schools to workplaces. Especially since their practice often involves aversive stimuli or punishment, they confront many special ethical challenges. Recently, the Behavior Analysis Certification Board codified a set of ten fundamental ethical guidelines to be followed by all behavior analysts and understood by all students and trainees seeking certification. This book shows readers how to follow the BACB guidelines in action. The authors first describe core ethical principles and then explain each guideline in detail, in easily comprehensible, everyday language. The text is richly illuminated by more than a hundred vivid case scenarios about which the authors pose, and later answer questions for readers. Useful appendices include the BACB Guidelines, an index to them, practice scenarios, and suggested further reading. Practitioners, instructors, supervisors, students and trainees alike will welcome this invaluable new aid to professional development.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This edited book draws from work that focuses on the act of telling family stories, as well as their content and structure. The process of telling family stories is linked to central aspects of development, including language acquisition, affect regulation, and family interaction patterns. This book extends across traditional developmental psychology, personality theory, and family studies.

Drawing broadly on the epigenetic framework for individual development articulated by Erik Erikson, as well as on conceptions of the family life cycle, the editors bring together contemporary examples of psychological research on family stories and their implications for development and change at different points in the life course. The book is divided into sections that focus on family stories at different points in the life cycle, from early childhood and the beginnings of narrative skill, through adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and then mature adulthood and its intergenerational meaning. During eachof these periods of the life cycle, research focusing on individual development within an Eriksonian framework of ego strengths and virtues is highlighted. The dynamic role of family stories is also featured here, with work exploring the links between family process, intergenerational attachment, and storytelling. Sociocultural theories that emphasize how such development is situated in the wider cultural context are also featured in several chapters. This broad lifespan developmental focus serves to integrate the exciting diversity of this work and foster further questions and research in the emerging field of family narrative.

The book is intended primarily for researchers and advanced-level students in the fields of developmental and personality psychology, as well as those in family studies and in gerontology. It may also be of interest to those in the helping professions who are concerned with family therapy and family issues, and may--due to its content and illustrative material--have appeal to a wider market of the lay public. The chapters are written in a readily accessible style and the analyses are presented in a fairly non-technical way. Because family stories are charted across the lifespan, it would be a suitable companion book to a more traditional lifespan textbook in certain courses.

PsycCRITIQUES

I found this book extremely well written and practically useful. I have especially benefited from the real life case examples in the book that illustrate ethical rules and guidelines. I would like to thank the authors for writing an invaluable book on ethics.

Bailey and Burch have done the field a valuable service with their comprehensive, in-depth coverage of the Behavior Analyst Certification Guidelines using real world examples and scenarios. I especially liked chapter 14, which provides a dozen tips for ethical conduct on one's first job. Assomeone who teaches an ABA class on ethics and gives workshops on clinical/ethical issues, I am delighted that I now have the perfect book to use for my class and recommend to workshop participants.

5.0 out of 5 stars much needed text on ethics, February 2, 2006

This review is from: Ethics for Behavior Analysts: A Practical Guide to the Behavior Analyst Certification board Guidelines for Responsible Conduct (Paperback)
The field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has experienced explosive growth over the last decade and a half. The over-riding goal of any ABA effort must be to increase the autonomy of the individual, his/her ability to make choices for his or her own life and to live independently within society. Unfortunately, many individuals who are supposedly providing ABA services have not received the training needed to engage in this effort responsibly, effectively, and ethically. Such individuals cannot therefore carry out the mission of ABA stated above. This book addresses the all-important ethical responsibilities of a behavior analyst, discussing the responsibilities of behavior analysts as regards their clients, colleagues, and the greater field. It should be required reading for anyone who wants to be involved in ABA. Perhaps most importantly for consumers, a familiarity with this book will allow a determination of the qualifications and ethical stances of prospective behavior analysts. The numerous case studies make all the information highly concrete. This book should become a standard in graduate level ethics courses, as well as for anyone trying to prepare for the BCBA or BCABA exam.

This is a good book and a must have for Behavior Analysts. My ONLY complaint is the cover that needs updating. It is one of the worst I've seen and portrays us as incredibly washed out and boring individuals - ha! The book itself is good - great and badly needed information - the gold standard.

This review is from: Ethics for Behavior Analysts: A Practical Guide to the Behavior Analyst Certification board Guidelines for Responsible Conduct (Paperback)
This was required reading for a college course I was taking, but I thought it was an excellent overview of the ethics in ABA. There were a lot of examples and it was easy to follow.
