Business MIS not ethics,
By Jode Poley (NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ethics in Information Technology (Paperback)
This text is highly reductionist. From the beginning his only concern is argue for protecting from monitary loss (he describes unethical behavior based on how much money you loose). In summary this is a book designed to develop a background for understanding why we have corporate security on IT/IS systems. The book really should be titled "MIS and Corporate Security the Current Social Backdrop".There is nothing real for the student to grab ahold of from an ethical stand point. Use this as source book for indentifying the current trends but don't expect it to cause your students to think.

It is a fast read, but has some flaws,

This review is from: Ethics in Information Technology (Paperback)
This book is a fast read for my Ethics class at school. The book offers relatively small chapters and intriguing context. However, some of the material that I have read does not seem right to me. I feel that this book follows many sections of the ethics world perfectly and offers great insight into the dos and don'ts, but at the same time mentions some material that is flawed. This book is OK, but could use some deeper research into the world of MMOs as well as preventing online crime.

Great Discussion Questions,
By
This review is from: Ethics in Information Technology (Paperback)
You don't normally think of ethical issues in the case of information technology, but this book brings many, many questions to the fore. ==For instance should American companies (Sun, Cisco, Yahoo! & Goodle) assist the Chinese government in censoring web access. They block access to words like 'Dalai Lama' and 'democracy.'
We have seen a raft of corporations filing bogus financial statements. These were undoubtedly produced on a computer. What about access to porn sights from public facilities like libraries or schools? What about pirated software, or pirated movies or songs. And computer controlled surveillance - it is said that the average person in London appears on 300 cameras. Where does a right to privacy interfere with a society's right to protection from vandals, from terrorists. This book features white pages and grey pages. The white pages describe facts, laws, rules, equipment and so on. The grey pages summarize the chapters but then give a large number of questions that either review the material or which can service as discussion questions for classroom use.

I bought this book for a course that I'm taking in college, it's actually not a bad read considering it is a text book.

Decent Ethics Book,

This review is from: Ethics in Information Technology (Paperback)
Obtained this book as part of my Ethics in Management Information Systems class I took. The book covered the topic well, but did not go into that great of detail as I would have expected. It is very easy to understand and someone with a basic knowledge of IT would be able to read it.

Kindle has no need for pages,
By
This review is from: Ethics in Information Technology, 3rd Edition (Kindle Edition)
I had to buy this textbook for a class. I've never used Kindle or any similar products, but I decided to buy this on Kindle and use it on my PC, since it was much cheaper and I won't want this book after the class is finished anyway.
I just started trying to use it, by reading something the professor told us was on pages 123 and 124. Apparently, Kindle doesn't bother having page numbers. You can skip to different "locations", but these don't correspond to the pages, nor are there consistent amounts of locations per page. So, now I'm going to have to try to find the section by searching for keywords and hope I read the right things. Do NOT buy a textbook on Kindle unless you know the professor assigns reading based on chapters.

Should be sued for slander and libel,
This review is from: Ethics in Information Technology (Paperback)
"Some regions in the World of Warcraft, an extremely popular online game, have become so lawless that gangs of animated characters frequently attack lone avatars, stealing their virtual belongings and sometimes murdering them (Reynolds, 2010) This was quoted from a 2007 article in Washington post staff writer Alan Sipres: "In World of Warcraft, the most popular online game, with an estimated 8 million participants worldwide, some regions of this fantasy domain have grown so lawless that players said they fear to brave them alone. Gangs of animated characters have repeatedly preyed upon lone travelers, killing them and making off with their virtual belongings (Sipres, 2007)
Was the truthfullness of claims in this book even a remote priority in creating this book? I wouldn't be surpised if Activision doesn't sue the author and publisher for slander. These claims are entirely false and 15 minutes of actual research (even 2nd hand) would prove that. This book and author are a joke to academia and journalism.
