Book Description

December 18, 2008 0205672361 978-0205672363 10

With a clear presentation, Ethics: Theory and Practice educates readers about ethical theory and has them apply what they learn to specific classic and contemporary moral problems (lying, cheating, establishing ethical business practices, honoring ethical obligations in medicine, etc.).

Jacques P. Thiroux first wrote this text 1977 in order to educate readers about ethical theory and its applications in a way that beginning students could understand.  The result was an accessible text that isn't too technical and doesn't plunge into complex readings without sufficient background.  The text is fully updated with global issues and non-Western ethical views. Keith W. Krasemann now continues Thiroux's efforts of making Ethical Ideas accesible to students. Besides updating the foundations of the text, Krasemann incoporates new and relevant material, most of which is often unique only to this text.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I personally think that the text is quite comprehensive. It does a good job of covering both the theoretical bases for ethics (in the first half of the text) and the current issues and areas of contention in ethics (in the remaining portion of the text)."

-Instructor Eugene Muhammad, Triton Community College

"Fundamental concepts, various theories, and a diverse set of issues are all well-covered, thoughtfully explained, and opposing points of view are considered."

-Professor William Ferraiolo, San Joaquin Delta College

"This is my favorite ethics text and is far better than any I have worked with. The variety of ethical theories and the depth of discussion for critical topics makes this a first choice."

-Professor Russell Fail, Kaplan University

From the Publisher

Evenly balanced between theory and applications, this text shows students how to establish an ethical theory and how to apply it to a range of specific moral issues. Using many recent cases and examples, the text examines ethical problems in such areas as mercy killing, personal relations, business, sexuality, medicine, and the environment. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Intro Ethics Book I've Seen, December 3, 2005
By
This book was required for my ethics class. I was dreading this class, but after beginning this book, I found myself interested not only in the subject matter, but also in the ideas presented by the author. The 8th edition has been updated to include new sections on stem cell research and terorism in the wake of September 11th. As long as one can read this book with an open mind, they will find it enlightning and interesting. Compared to other ethics readings, this book is a joy to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good textbook for Introductory Ethics, July 20, 2002
By
I have used this textbook in my Intro to Ethics class... for three years. I would highly recommend it; it presents ethical theory in a concise and interesting fashion appropriate for a undergraduate level introduction to ethics. I especially like applied ethics aspects of the book. Thiroux presents compelling and controversial case studies in which students can apply the theory that they have learned in the first 4-5 chapters.

A few problems with the text:

(1) I'm not a big fan of Thiroux's personal ethical position -- this position is far too prominent in the text.

(2) Related to (1), I don't like the inclusion of the Appendices. In them, Thiroux further expounds on his position of Humanitarian Ethics and applies the position to most of the case studies that he presented the student with in the book. In my experience, I have found that once students find this section of the book, they use it almost as an answer key.

Overall, this is a good introductory text with far more plusses than minuses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Text With Good Instructor's Manual, July 22, 2008

This text is solid and easy to read. The case studies are up to date and relevant. This is one of the more "user friendly" texts I have used this year.

The instructor's manual has good test questions, excellent synopsis, and workable suggestions introducing each class. If you use this text to teach a class, get the instructor's manual.
