Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Especially for those working in relative isolation, a handbook on professional ethics can be an important tool in navigating potentially explosive waters. Simpson has compiled 10 competently researched and written articles dealing with the ethical aspects of collection development, access, confidentiality, technology, intellectual freedom, intellectual property, administration, Internet use, and professional relationships. Each chapter/article is written in a reader-friendly format and includes its own list of references and discussion questions, making the book suitable for classroom use. All of the familiar and worrisome issues are addressed and discussed with enough insight, intelligence, and experience to provide school librarians with a solid base of research and opinion from which to work, even though solutions are neither simple nor definitive. Particularly interesting are the chapters on patron confidentiality, often difficult to maintain in the school setting where teachers have access to nearly all other student information, and on technology and the Internet, which nobody seems to have a really good handle on. School librarians and administrators would do well to have this thought- and discussion-provoking book on hand, because the day will come (maybe really soon) when they'll need it.
