Unique in its philosophical, cultural approach- this book offers a voice of context and reflection that fills a vital gap in the present discourse of Ethiopian history, politics, and modernization efforts.

I found it both informative and inspiring- and URGE others to read it- whether you are a historian, retiree, student or stay at home mom...the book is written in clear language and presents ideas that leaves the reader to consider new angles and broaden his/her perspective for themselves. Highly recommend.

Dr. Wolde-Yohannes' work is a very thoughtful and scholarly reflection on Ethiopia's past and present, and the cultural and psychological forces which impede its material progress. However, for much of the "third" and emerging world, these problems are virtually identical. So while this is ostensibly a book about Ethiopia, it is easily translatable into an analysis of numerous other countries and cultures. I find that the insights offered in his book cast a elucidating light into societies with which I am familiar, such as Indian and Caribbean society. As such, I recommend it to those who, though unfamiliar with Ethiopia, are interested in this subject, to read this impressive work.

Dr Wolde-Johannes examines different theories of "progress," including racial superiority, Marxist dialectical materialism, and the relationship between wealth and religion, and does an admirable critcal analysis of each theory.(Chapter 2). He later proceeds (in chapter 4) to embark on a remakable exposition on the traits of progressive cultures including competition, precision, philanthrophy, memory, and imagination which I found to be profoundly philosophical and thought-provoking. He then concludes by offering some possible solutions to the problems.

This book is not an arrogant tome, but a bright offering by a scholar who deserves the great recognition he is due. I highly urge readers to read this work. If Ethiopian history does not interest you, go directly to chapter 2 and you will still find yourself captivated by his sociological, historical and philosophical analysis of cultures and the forces that propel them forward or impede their progress. You will not be disappointed.

A great book. Disappointing ending. Falls into some of the traps the author discusses as trapping Ethiopia. Generally highly recommended.

Samuel Wolde-Yohannes offers an erudite examination of Ethiopia's issues and problems. He provides a thorough historical overview and also an assessment of various cultural and historical theories as they apply to Ethiopia. He then proceeds to effectively suggest ways in which the country can progress.
