Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Orchestra Ethiopia, a folkloric music and dance troupe that was founded in the Creative Arts Center of Haile Selassie I University (Now Addis Ababa University) in 1963, endured until 1975, shortly after the advent of the Derg regime. The founder, Egyptian-American composer and ethnomusicologist Halim El-Dabh, brought all of the various Ethiopian tradational instruments together for the first time to play as an organized ensemble. Subsequent directors of the group were Peace Corps Volunteer John Coe and composer/lyricist Tesfaye Lemma. The administrator of the group, PCV Charles Sutton, arranged for the Orchestra to make a concert tour of the U.S. in 1969, during which the ensemble performed on stages in twenty American cities and on the nationally televised Ed Sullivan Show, and received a laudatory review from the New York Times, among many other newspapers.

"Ethiopiques 23", a product of the combined efforts of Ethiopiques series director Francis Falceto, Lemma, and Sutton, is a representative and well-documented compilation of some of the best music recorded by Orchestra Ethiopia. Included with the CD are many remarkable historical photographs as well as an essay recounting (in both English and French)the entire history of the Orchestra.

For lovers of Ethiopian music and students of Ethiopian music history alike, "Ethiopiques 23: Orchestra Ethiopia" is a must-have recording.
