Book Description

January 1, 2003
This case study introduces students to the problems of ethnic diversity in China, a modern nation-state that is normally thought of and taught as culturally monolithic. By introducing students to the wide diversity of identity within one nationality, they are exposed to the ethnic complexities as well as to the larger issue of ethnic pluralism in modern nation-states. Students' perceptions regarding other societies, as well as our own, are challenged and broadened.

Over the past 15 years, Dru Gladney has established himself as the foremost writer on China's complex mix of ethnicities. This is a primer in this field, with case studies that illustrate various ethnic groups and pitfalls in this field. Strongly recommend for anyone interested in this potentially explosive field.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Primer, February 3, 2007

After visiting China a number of times, but taking an inland trip for the first time in 2006, this book was very helpful in helping unravel and explain how many of the ehtnic minorities fit into China. I found the on street insights "the colour" from these minorities especially helpful - they support this academic's comments and observations rather than sit in a card index in his office.
