Book Description

0803996071 978-0803996076 January 1990
The author examines the theoretical approaches to the study of ethnicity and nation-building; the ethnic layout of the South Asian region; the specific state structures of the countries studied and the attitudes of central regimes to the issue of ethnic identities; specific ethnic movements in the countries examined; and, the constraints and compulsions within which regimes handle domestic ethnic assertion. The study points out both the similarities of conditions between the South Asian political systems and the differences in specific cases both as regards assertion of ethnic identities as well as their handling by the regimes. This study also situates the politics of ethnicity in the global geo-political context.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`The author bases her diagnosis of ethnic ills on the minutiae of historical records (for which her book is well worth reading), clearly demonstrating the origins of the separatism of the Dravidians, Buluchis, Sikhs, Chittagong hill tribes and so on.' - The Times of India

`The book provides an appraisal of different theoretical approaches to the study of ethnicity and nation-building. It delineates the ethnic composition of the South Asian region, and examines the specific state structures of the countries studied.' - Community Development

`This volume is a fitting testimony to the life's work of one of the Indian subcontinent's foremost political scientists, whose death...was a tremendous loss to students and colleagues. With sensitivity and analytical rigour, Professor Phadnis addressed the central issues of regional politics in both their intrastate and interstate manifestations.' - International Affairs
