Editorial Reviews

Inspired by traditional music from around the globe as well as Coldcut's Journey By DJ series, Simon Emerson (of Afro-Celts fame) and journalist/producer Phil Meadley formed The Outernationalists. Ethnomusicology, which is the duo's debut, not only does an excellent job fusing new beats and sounds with older traditional songs, it also manages to put the 14 tracks into a seamless 64-minute club mix. As a bonus, many of the tracks featured here are rare or unreleased. Overall, though, the most refreshing part of this musical journey is that the mix goes against conventional wisdom of world music remixes, which are typically on the celestial or lounge vibe. This is worldbeat music that will definitely get people moving on the dance floor. Cakeboy's "Big & Bouncy," a juvenile ode to women's breasts, shows the duo's sillier side, while Bucovina Club Vs. Taraf de Haïdouks's "Carolina" is gypsy-dancehall jam that best showcases their inquisitive nature and deep knowledge of the music. --Tad Hendrickson

Product Description

The Outernationalists is a collaborative effort between Afro Celts' founder/guitarist Simon Emmerson and leading U.K. music writer/DJ/producer Phil Meadley. Their DJ-mixed compilation Ethnomixicology is a unique trip into the heart of global beat culture featuring many rare and exclusive tracks.  On Ethnomixicology, Simon Emmerson and Phil Meadley have looked deep into the bustling, vibrant multi-cultural heart of London and come up with a seriously funky club mix of Afro, Indian, Arabic, Latin, and global psychedelia in the style of Coldcut's classic, Journeys By DJ.

This review is from: Ethnomixicology (Audio CD)
I love this CD because it brings a wide variety of sounds together with the common goal of making the listener dance. There isn't a bad track to be found on Ethnomixicology. Get it now and shake your booty every time you listen to it.

I was delighted to discover Urban Trad through this CD, I highly recommend them to any fan of the Afrocelts. My other favorite here is Kamel Nitrate, smokin' hot!
