A FRIENDLY CONFERENCE. It is rare, in our present civilization, to find a man who lives alone. This remark does not apply to hermits or persons of abnormal or perverted mental tendencies, but to the majority of mankind living and moving actively among their fellows, and engaged in the ordinary occupations of humanity. Every man must have at least one confidant, either of his own household, or within the circle of his intimate friends. There may possibly be rare exceptions among persons of genius in statecraft, war, or commerce, but it is doubtful even in such instances if any keep all their thoughts to themselves, hermetically sealed from their fellows. As a prevailing rule, either a loving wife or very near friend shares the inner thought of the most secretive individual, even when secrecy seems an indispensable element to success. The tendency to a free interchange of ideas and experiences is almost universal, instinct prompting the natural man to unburden his most sacred thought, when the proper confidant and the proper time come for the disclosure. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Philosophical and Physical Journey, March 18, 1998
By
This review is from: Etidorpha (Paperback)
Most people are familiar with Jules Verne's account of a journey to the center of the Earth but not as many enthusiasts of science fiction or fantasy literature are conversant with this forgotten classic. Being out of print is truly the incorrect fate for this fine story. The tale describes the adventure of a man who joins a secret society for the purpose of publishing a book describing this organization's beliefs and rituals. When he publishes the book the society kidnaps him, transforms him into an old man and sends him on a journey into the interior of Earth on a spiritual mission that he does not know the end result of. The book creates a strange feeling as the reader's beliefs about the world and the way it runs are cast into question. This book succeeds where Verne's does not, in that it not only provides a great physical journey but also a great spiritual one. The ending leaves a feeling of awe and mystery that is not often found in fantastic literature.
