A Fantastic Philosophical and Physical Journey,
By Jeremy Dunn(jeremydunn@ibm.net) (Bellingham,Washington,USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Etidorpha (Paperback)
Most people are familiar with Jules Verne's account of a journey to the center of the Earth but not as many enthusiasts of science fiction or fantasy literature are conversant with this forgotten classic. Being out of print is truly the incorrect fate for this fine story. The tale describes the adventure of a man who joins a secret society for the purpose of publishing a book describing this organization's beliefs and rituals. When he publishes the book the society kidnaps him, transforms him into an old man and sends him on a journey into the interior of Earth on a spiritual mission that he does not know the end result of. The book creates a strange feeling as the reader's beliefs about the world and the way it runs are cast into question. This book succeeds where Verne's does not, in that it not only provides a great physical journey but also a great spiritual one. The ending leaves a feeling of awe and mystery that is not often found in fantastic literature.
